  • Replacing Odometer on Gauge Cluster?

How do you go about changing the odometer out when replacing my 115 mph speedo gauge cluster for a 155 mph speedo? Can a service station do it, or do they leave the new 1 in with the incorrect mileage, and write a sticker on your drivers side door jam with whatever your mileage is off by?

I plan on doing the gauge cluster installation myself, but wan't the service station to give me something showing my correct mileage which is about 17,000 more miles then whats on the nerw odometer. I don't wan't to have problems when I get my car inspected, and the mileage is lower then when I brought it in 2 years ago.

The odometer will come out of the back of your cluster and fit right into the new cluster.

Dont mean to hi-jack the thread, but how hard is it to replace the overlay itself? Im thinking about replacing my stock one with the OEM one which came with the 3.23 Gear Ratio Z28's. I think my overlay might already be faded because the "Low Oil" light appears to be on when its not. Im guessing some of the light from the speedo is bleeding onto the "Low Oil" part of the overlay.

I'm very confused. I have gotten 2 people saying I could take the odometer right out of the new cluster saying that its only being held in by 3 bolts, and 2 others 1 being a service station saying that you can't????? A guy told me that the odometer is part of the cluster, & it doesn't come out. He said take it to a dealership, and they will send it to a place called Delphi to get it done. Whose right. UGH!!!!!

All I need to do is take my old 1 out of the 115 speedo, and put it in the 155 speedo. No adjusting necessary since I have 2 odometers. Is this do able?

That is because it is illegal for them to do it. They have to be a state certified calibrator of speedometers. Sounds goofy, but that's the government's way of trying to police odometer fraud.

So I can take it out, and replace with my other 1? Actually by doing this I'm making it legal. lol By putting mine in that has 17,000 more miles then the gauge i just bought.

Yes it is technically illegal to mess with it but go ahead and do it. If you don't and get it inspected or when you try to sell it then it'll show up as odometer fraud. Do it your self just take the odometer out of your 115 and put it in the 155. Your not commiting fraud your keeping your same miles and its that simple.

3 screws. Just swap it into the new cluster.

Thanks that clears it up. Good picture, so the whole odometer is attached to that plastic piece, and I just SWAP the 2 plastic pieces with odometer inside to the gauge clusters? Don't even really touch the actual odometer just the plastic piece holding it.

The clear piece it is fastened to with the screws is actually the guage face. I had the guage overlay removed when that picture was taken, so it appears to be clear when in reality the black (or white) with the adhesive overlay stuck on it.

                      see?

the guage face is simply friction-fit into the guage housing. Once the screws holding the bezel and trim are removed it pulls off revealing the futs of the cluster. You'll see what I mean.

Is that the type with the number wheels, right? So what happens if you have the newer digital one? How do you get a new one to match your old mileage?

                          You dont.

The digital ones cannot be altered. Which kinda sucks because then there is no way to swap parts and keep the miles accurate.

You have to take your digital guage to a GM dealer and they'll send it away but it costs you around $100. My brother had to do it on his 99Z28 when he replaced his cluster.

I got my 155 mph gauge cluster finally today. I removed the back plastic piece, and there is a green computer board blocking me from taking the odometer out. Now what I'm lost??????? Are you sure its serviceable. I havn't messed with the one on my car yet. Trying to figure this 1 out first. The plastic cover they gave me is all messed up with big scatches, but I can use mine. lol
