  • Rebuilding a 700R4?

Well, if everything goes according to plan, in my next class at college we are going to have to rebuild some transmissions (if they don't work, we fail ). I figured this will be a great chance to rebuild my tranny, which is a 1991 700R4 (technically a 4L60), it's not in bad shape, but the fluids always brown and sometimes can't decide quite when to shift, but it doesn't slip at all. I'm no expert on transmissions, but I have torn down various manual and auto trannies in previous classes.

What I trying to get at is:

    1. Are there any good books or literature about rebuilding 700R4s (a.k.a. 4L60)?
    2. Does anyone recommend or know of a good rebuild kit?
    3. I figured since the tranny's apart, I'd get a Transgo shift kit with a Corvette servo from Probuilt. But, should I get a higher stall torque converter, even though I have stock heads and cam?

Thanks for any advice of suggestions.

There are a few rebuilt guides out there for your tranny. I recommend what ever your Professor does, Im sure he has had one apart befor. CSI offers excellent rebuilt kits, I had mine rebuilt once with that kit and it accual lasted longer than the other 3 stock rebuild kits I had used. Also befor you go out spending all this money on Tranny parts, Be aware of what you do have already, The Corvette Servor is the same Part# as the stock f-body servo. I also happen to know that Texas Motorsports is selling a CSI 4l60E rebuild kit in the garage sell site. I think it will work for you but not sure.

I don't trust my teacher's opinion , seriously! Some of the teachers I respect and are cool, and others, well, I don't. Thanks for the advice, so far.
