It's only used at startup to heat up the cats. If they do a visual inspection and you removed it, that would fail you. It would also throw a code, which would automatically fail you if they plug into the computer.

Depends - What year is your car?

The 4th Gens are as noted above, only runs at startup. Whether is "throws a code" again depends on the year of the car.... 93-95 will not set a code as long as there is a good fuse on the circuit. 96 and up sets a code/SES light. The absence of the pump would only show up on startup, so it would depend on the drive cycle your particular state uses for testing emissions. Most drive cycles don't include cold start.

The 3rd Gens are different. The AIR pump initially feeds air to the exhaust manifolds to help the cat(s) heat up, and then switches the air flow to the pipe on the side of the cat. This extra air is required in the split bed cats, to oxidize the HC's and CO. You could possible fail emissions by deleting the AIR system on a 3rd Gen.

Suggestion - Add a "signature" with the year of your car, engine, trans, and any major mods, to help people answer your questions.

I guess my reason for asking is I was looking into some headers. I like the look of headers without all the AIR plumbing. From what i can tell the drivers side cat is pretty much connected to the exhaust manifold. The passanger side doesn't look too far away either. So it shouldn't take to much time to heat up without the AIR. Can you have the OBD II programed not to trip the AIR codes??? Thanks again...
