  • boy am I glad I didn't get long tubes

I just got a notice in the mail for my registration. Well, it's been 2 years since smog, so that's coming up too...and guess what. It said "You must smog your car at a smog-only center. Read insert" So I'm thinking with any long-tubes or even mid-lengths I would automatically fail visual. BTW, the insert said something like smog-only centers are for vehicles that are likely to pollute more and/or fail smog. I thought our cars are pretty clean.

LOL, that's a long friend list.

But I'm not too worried about the smog, as of yet. Everything is running OK, and the previous smogs have showed the car spews out 0 hydrocarbons, and practically 0.0 of everything else. The only thing different since last time is the increased lift on the valves - which I don't think should affect anything? I'm surely going to cap off the Borla cut-out, but I would laugh extremely hard if the tester puts the sniffer on the closed side of the cut-out on the exhaust.

Now I would be a bit worried if I got the AS&M headers, which are mid-length and not CARB approved.

I don't see why headers would fail you. As long as you have all federally required emissions equipment, headers are just redesigned manifolds. They simply expel exhaust gasses more efficiently, they don't create more exhaust or dirtier exhaust. Believe me, you arent the only one with headers out there.....

PA's smog law has an exemption for cars driven less than 5,000 miles/year. No test required (visual or sniffer).... great for guys like me whose f-bodies arent daily drivers! Mod away!

cali says that u ahve to have a CARB legal part..which is why some headers fail and some dont

I used to know a guy who knew a guy too but he got busted. He used to leave his car in the bay and ran the test on his own vehicle. For about 8 years every car he tested had the same emissions as a datsun pickup truck. With this OBDII it's harder to beat. You CA boys must have it easy, NC does visual and sniffer every year.

Mike's right...you must have CARB approved headers if you want to abide by the exact law. However, there are some, as Mike's friend, who will pass you.

All in all though, I was referring to long tubes, which either delete the cats or move them. It is against CA law to move the cat from the original location. Although most will not know the exact location, some actually ask for the CARB number, or look for it to be stamped on one of the primaries.

mirroredshades, nc emissions depends on the county. Its more expensive for the emissions inspection too. My z28 is registered in ny, so i don't have to worry about that. When i bought my truck, i used the previous owners registration, because it wasn't in my name yet, and he lives in a non emission testing county, hoke county.

The exemption sticker is $10 (at least it is at my shop, I don't know if that's standard) and the car has to be driven less than 5,000 in the previous calender year.... there are other exemptions also, PennDOT's website has them listed.

The deal with the WS6 fell through, but I have another buyer lined up that seems just as interested. I actually had to put them off when the original guy gave me a deposit to hold it for him. Maybe I just wasn't meant to sell it?
