  • rebuilding my 383. need help

Well this winter I will be tearing my motor down and doing it up my way so I know what I have. I bought with the 383 but something just isnt right. It has the lt4 heads and intake port and polished but it has the hypereutectic pistons and I think I should go forged. I want to biuld it for a supercharger so it needs to be strong. Any ideas on waht pistons I should use or crank and cam? Any suggestions would be great. I should of bought a regular lt1 t/a and built it up from there but I just had to have it (stupid) Thanks

When I built mine, I used Keith Black Hypereutectic pistons and had them coated at Swaintech. The coatings would be great for the supercharger and would be as good if not better than forged pistons.

Thanks for the site. So what there saying is that I could give them my pistons and they would coat them and it would make them as strong as new if not as strong as forged?

The pistons get a ceramic coating on the tops. This makes them virtually impervious to melting the domes. I know the owner of swaintech personally; I am good friends with his son. He says that unless you do something seriously stupid with your air/fuel ratios, you WONT burn a piston.

A poly moly coating is applied to the piston skirts and this helps to reduce friction. It works. After I put some oil on my pistons and slid them into the bores (without the rings) they slid up and down like they were on ice. Really cool. Supposedly it wont wear off like the imitation coatings on speed-pro pistons do.

A lot of guys coat their pistons and then run the motor leaner to get more power, you can do this, but I just run them for the extra protection on the nitrous. Dan Swain says that on a typical V8 engine, without any other mods other than the coatings, you can expect around 15 horsepower.

If you go with Swaintech, tell them that Sean Campbell sent you over.
