  • Descreened MAF??

I have seen alot of guys say they have descreened MAF.I have a 95 TA 6 psi supercharger, edelbrock headers,.I have been checking into MAF sensors .I know granatelli is an option but i was curious how much difference there is from a descreened stock maf to a granatelli? If its worth doing do you just remove the screen by pulling it out or is there a certain way to do it.

There is a clip ring that holds in the screen, take a flathead screwdriver or a pick and pull the clip out.

on mine, I descreened and removed the center alum on mine. now I just gotta get Lt1-edit and move out the numbers for it

You can also use a dremal and bore out the two metal shells at both ends and cut out the two fins. Once is almost smooth use a cylinder hone on it in a vise for a hour or so and the sides will be smooth as a a cylinder.

Just stick with your stock de-screened MAF sensor. The aftermarket MAF's such as the Granatelli contain physically re-wired circuitry that enables the MAF sensor to report less air than is actually being metered. This can "theoretically" offer about 10-15 fly HP on an otherwise stock NA setup by leaning out the a/f ratio in Power Enrichment Mode of the PCM (WOT).

I definitely would not recommend an MAF that under reports metered air coming into a boosted motor. A leaned out a/f at WOT in PE mode can turn out to be NOT user friendly under boost. The stock MAF has been proven to support over 700 HP so you should be fine until you get to that point.

That sounds good.Is is a big gain to bore the body out or would i be just as well to descreen it and leave it alone.I sure dont wanna mess it up.The car is programmed with hypertech programmer,i asume i wouldnt need to change anything after descreening ?I appreciate all the help, this is a great site!

De-screening should be sufficient for your current power levels. Many tuners don't like to even mess with tuning a car that has an aftermarket MAF or a modified stock TB (aside from the de-screening).

I de screened mine and it seems add a little just my impression no data to back that up but one thing that has not been mentioned be sure you run a good air filter that seals to the air box or your engine could swallow some bad things or the MAF wires could be damaged by debris

Before you do any modifications, I would suggest picking up another good used MAF. That way if the calibration ends up too lean, you still have the original.

That sounds like a good idea.If the maf did make the car too lean would i be able to tell while driving.I dont really have anything to check that with. The car runs great now, i am just about out of money after doing all the other stuff,i was looking for a way to get some cheap gains but i dont wanna damage the car for sure. Thanks for all the help!

My MAF is descreened and ported pretty good. It works fine. My first one lasted for at least 30K, and I think it went bad from an overly lubed K@N filter......the nice thing is that you can swap the ported housing over to the next MAF.
