  • thinking about getting a cam...

actually, got a Christmas list and thinking about getting a cam...

but before I decide on what to get...how will effect daily driving. I'll be getting new pushrods and roller rockers etc...just not sure if that's the route I want to take if camming would drastically effect engine longeveity.

Personally, I like the sound of a cammed f-body...

SFC, Cam, LT...that's the list thus far...

Generally speaking if your heads are stock, as long as you stay under 230-ish @ .050" you won't affect streetability or gas mileage much at all. Depending on how big of a cam you go will dictate whether or not tuning will be of benefit to you.

How much power are you looking to make? Or are you more so leaning towards a cam that will just sound good?

      that was what I was thinking...nothing crazy...probably 208/216 .50

looking for a little more low end...but I make more power than I can use on the street anyways...so I'm leaning more on sound.

any recommendations as for a cam...I got an auto, would that dictate a particular cam?

      thanks fastTA

        CC TN-218XL 218/224 @ .050", .526"/.536", 112lsa

        CC TN-221XL 221/227 @ .050", .542"/.560", 112lsa

        CC TN-224XL 224/230 @ .050", .536"/.544", 112lsa

All three of these track/dyno proven Comp Cam grinds are very streetable. Even with the 224XL and a good tune you will not lose any gas mileage or streetability to speak of.

Do you plan on going with a bigger stall?

You want a 112 LSA on a NA motor. 114 or higher wouldn't really be worth the cam swap. Plus with that small of a duration, the effective overall overlap is small enough to be plenty streetable. Plus he said he wanted it to sound good....a 114 LSA would barely have any noticeable lope.

Of those three listed, the 218/224 is probably the best choice. You can have it ground on a 114* LSA too, but that cam has an incredibly broad powerband and makes really good power/torque too.

You could pull off keeping the stock converter with the 218XL and 221XL, but I would go with a 2000-2400 stall if you decided on going with something bigger like the 224XL. You would have a lot of fun with a 2400 stall!
