I'm looking to switch my m6 to a th400 and was wondering if anyone had dyno and quater mile results? I will have a brake with a 4000 stall. Any similar set ups?

I saw 12.2% (@ 800HP) to 12.6% (@ 500HP) drivetrain loss with the T56. TH400 showed 19.8% (500HP) to 21.3% loss (800HP). NA performance was not materially affected.... other than to eliminate the huge ET loss from my poor T56 shifting. NA ET's with the T56 were high 11's. Mid-11's with the TH400. MPH was in the range of 115-117MPH for both. Spraying 125HP on the TH400 (never sprayed with the T56) it ran almost 128MPH, but the ET was only 11.1, due to the convertor being sized for the future 300-shot (5K flash @ 800 lb-ft). That kept the nitrous from coming in until the car was about 100-ft out.Fred

Yea, 14.3 @ 99 mph in my 69 GTO. That has a TH400
If youre building the car for the strip....its a no brainer. Go with the TH400, its strong and consistant. You cant beat it.
If your building a street car, then you have a tough decision. The T56 is strong, but not consistant on the strip. On the street, theres no better choice, because you can bang those gears and you have a real nice O.D. ratio (two, actually).
I went with the T56 because I visit the strip maybe 3-4 times a season. THe rest of the time is street driving. I could probably drop a half or 3/4 of a second in E.T. with a TH400, but I would sacrifice so much on the street. I like to take my car on nice roadtrips to Niagra Falls, or one of the finger lakes, or sometimes longer trips down to Virginia. You CANT do that with a 3 speed automatic.....96 WS6 Formula: Ram Air, 383 Stroker, Ported LT4 Heads and Manifold, 1.6 Crane Rollers, 58MM T.B., AS&M Headers, Borla Exhaust, Meziere Elec. You may want to look in to a 200-R4 out of a GN or a built one from TCI or Art Carr. There a lot lighter than the 4l60-E and the T400 but they have OD and 9,432,758,125,678 parts and upgrade are out there for em.1967 VW Bug 2.3L Ford SVO Inline 4 w/ Turbo, Sand-Drag VW Trans Axle, Race this Import.

4L60E's can easily be built to handle in excess of 1000 lb/ft of TQ load for about the same price as a basic race prepped TH400. The TH400 will absorb roughly 2.5%-3.5% more power than the 4L60E, but it is inherantly stronger and a little better suited for the abuse of a drag car. The TH400 is also about 25lbs lighter than the 4L60E on my scale. Either tranny will work for your power levels, but if it were me and I was building a dedicated drag car, I would go the TH400 route.
Another advantage of going the TH400 route would be that it would be considerably cheaper to freshen up a TH400 every so often as opposed to a 4L60E or 700R4.
