I appreciate the thanks guys. They were going to have us work today, but me and a couple other combat vets (some 2 time) in our shop refused and went and talk to the commander about it. So I will enjoy this day and remember all other vets, past and present, and maybe even change the oil in my vehicles today.2006 GTO Impulse Blue Metallic, Blue Leather Interior

Y'all are very welcome and it's gracious of you to remember, especially all the men & women that got killed & injured to keep our country and others free. 5 vets in my family that I know of (besides me) and I am really proud of all of them. One time when we were out to sea (Fleet Marines, USS Kityhawk) and had nothing better to do, we figured out that for the hours we worked (about 14/7 + duty) we were getting paid about $.50 an hour and we had to laugh about that. Nobody's in it for the money, believe me. These people really believe in what they're doing and they do it selflessly, with honor & sacrifice. So, all my thanks to the members of the Armed forces for everything! Stay Safe!

I, of course, am proud of our country's vets and respect what they do. I don't think I could. But a quick question... why, as a vet, would you refuse to work today? Christians work on Christmas and Easter, we still work on Labor Day. Just curious. Should an employer honor a request from a vet who wants off on veterans day?Dave M

I have never had it off, but federal employees like mail carriers, who might or might not be vets, get it off which is what seems to make it a little unfair. I never met a vet who refused to work on veterans day.Originally posted by Dave MI, of course, am proud of our country's vets and respect what they do. I don't think I could. You really cannot make the comparison of veterans to Christians in this regard. Both titles have a unique and very different type of honor.Originally posted by Dave MI, of course, am proud of our country's vets and respect what they do. I don't think I could. Veterans earned their title by selflessly serving and vowing to protect our country, and in many cases laying their lives on the line to do so. Christians are labled so because of their faith and beliefs in a particular religion.
Their are many vets whom I'm sure are Christians and oppositely likewise. Having said that one could say that Christians have also had a direct hand in fighting the battles that have earned and protected our country's freedom, but the reality is that the flesh and blood of the man (the veteran) was the one who served and vowed to protect our country. It was the veteran in the man that fought without fear or any vain conscience in order to to keep this country secure. It was the Christianity in the man's heart and soul that carried him through.
I think a day off work for these vets is the least we can do for them.
