  • It's what I expected, my insurance company is trying to screw me

The adjuster calls me, tells me the damage to the structure is $26K, not including personal property damage. Then she starts talking about depreciation of things and my deductable, the net figure they want to give me is $11K. That won't pay for crap. How the hell do they expect people to put things back together? I'm so pissed right now, I can't even see straight. I think for now I am just going to shut my mouth. If I don't, I'm gonna get banned. Just when I thought things might work out, I get dealt another blow.

I hate insurance companies. Them and all their lawyers are doing our country a great disservice by driving up the prices of nearly everything.

They do not exist to help us. They exist to make themselves rich. Have you ever noticed the GIGANTIC luxurious buildings they house their offices in? Thats just chump change. I would love to see someone open a "not for profit" insurance company.

Wow, sorry to hear that Joe. I've been screwed (or tried to be screwed) by insurance companies several times, but never even close to $15k
That really makes me sick. You cannot miss one penny on your payments, and it must not be 1 day late. However, they give you any old figure at their convenience. Do you have any other possible option? Can they really try to screw you that bad?

I saw something on the news about how the insurance companies down in Florida are screwing people over on their claims after the hurricanes, because quite simply, they are not prepared for so many claims being filed all at one time. They don‘t actually have the money that they are supposed to have to pay out, so they have to severely discount everybody. Its not right though, and I would like to think that the government can supplement somehow to help everyone rebuild. If this crap keeps up, Florida businesses may end up suffering in the long run, so I can’t see why the government would not be helping out to keep the economy going, if nothing else.

Time to get your ducks in a row. Don't take their first offer, if its all the adjuster will do, ask higher up. It may take months for you to get a agreeable settlement. Are they paying for ALL of your damages and off site living expenses, car rentals, landscape, tree removal, clean up, etc..... It all adds up as an expense to you, and that's why you have been paying them in case something like this happens, they owe you, don't give up. You may need to get a attorney involved, even a letter from one will help them see it your way. File a complaint with the insurance commissioner. There is alot you can do to get things rolling in your favor.

If you have a "Replacement" cost policy, they should pay everything but your deductible. If you bought a "depreciated" cost policy, they are correct. Read your policy. Especially the exclusions part.

Norman, just exactly how does an insurance company assess depreciation? Seems greatly excessive in Joe's case. Both times we lost our entire downstairs to the flooding here, FEMA and our insurance policy paid for everything and then some. And, we didn't have the replacement policy.

Joe what has FEMA said? Seems they should kick in a good deal of money as well!

This country can destroy iraq and then send them billions to repair, but can't help take care of it's own people? Sic.

Sucks to hear it Joe. It's a shame, these people have no regulations and can do pretty much whatever they please. They want all your money, but when it comes to doing their part, they will try to screw you over, or use money you pay to them to pay lawyers to get out of paying you. What a joke. I've heard of them doing this to other people. I guess what they do is HOLD OUT, don't accept their offers, hold out for more. Hopefully you'll get it. Good luck to ya.

And by relecting GWB you guys gave him the approval that he's doing the right thing???? I've been saying this all along, Billions are being wasted in Iraq and to this day Americans are being shot at and killed. I know I stop before I get completely off topic.

Joe, sorry to hear about your dealings with the insurance company. Many times unless the insured item is a total wreck it's cheaper to just pay for it than have the insurance company pay. They kick you out or jack up the rates skyhigh. Of course they don't have a problem taking your premiums on a monthly basis.

If you're a vet, or your father was a vet you may qualify for USAA insurance - they are not-for-profit. I've had them for 20 years and also bank thru their fed Savings Bank, have IRAs there, etc. It's a good deal - used to be for officers & their families, but now they allow enlisted. Sometimes I get rebate checks from the insurance if they have less claims than expected in a given year.
