  • Hello!.....and need advice.

    Hey guys

Been a long time since I posted here. Some of you may remember me as "Black Sunshine" back in the day, while sporting my 95 m6 and 79 Formula. Well, I ran outta money(college) and had to put those cars on hold so I have not posted in a while. But after a year and a half, unfortunatley I came back from school so I pulled the z outta the garage.

After about a month, I was driving and started getting the dreaded "ca clunk ca clunk". So I towed her to the mech and he said my rear end gears were stripped and I needed a new rear end. 800 parts + 500 labor. I am no expert, but since when do you have to replace the entire rear-end when your gears go out. I thought the gears where just housed in the rear end. They said they smelled burnt oil.

Heres my situation. A.) They called my dad at work and not me and he authorized them to start doing the work at noon today, should I be able to call em and get to not do the work this morning? B.) I hate buying remanufactured products, I figure if you are replacing, UPGRADE. So I want 4.10s outta the deal. C.) Should I go get a second opinion? D.) When I originally got the car outta the garage it wouldnt go into gear, so I towed it to a tranny shop. They got it into gear but said the rear seal on diff had to be replaced. Could they have botched the job and caused this...and if not, shouldnt there have been some sign of wear in the gears?

Anyway thanks in advance for any advice.

When I stripped two of the teeth on the pinion gear on the Dana 44 in my Jeep, it basically took out everything but the shafts and the housing. The ring gear was shot and the carrier was no good. It ran about that much for me out the door. But, since you're already having it all replaced, I would go ahead and upgrade. While the stock Posi unit isn't bad, I'm sure there's much better out there that can be had for the same price as the stock carrier. Gears will run you the same no matter the ratio, so why not get some 3.73s or 4.10s. Hope this helps. Good luck and take care.

There is no way I would pay $1400 to rebuild, even with upgrades on a factory rear. For that kind of dough, look into an aftermarket unit that you bolt right in and would be mucho stronger. If you're on a budget of any kind, a take out rear end for a couple hundered bucks is all you need. I see them all the time, complete with brakes for less between 200-250.

Could they have botched the pinion seal? Yup...... the biggest culprit is if the shop didn't record any torque readings on disassembly and just "put it back together". Too often a shop just tightens the pinion nut "around" the point where it was. When that happens, expect the ring and pinion to not live a long life afterward as the clearances would have been changed. Proving they did that is almost an impossibility.
