  • Replacing an LT1 dipstick tube

While installing headers, my dipstick tube broke, leaving part of it in the block. Is it possible to pull the oilpan out from underneath the car? It seems like it should be able to slide between the block and the engine cradle, but I don't know how far the crank/oil pickup hang down...
    Has anyone done this?

A signature would really help out so everyone knows what kind of car your talking about. If your talking about an LT1 yes it is possible but a pain. You'll have to take off the oil cooler lines, get the y-pipe out of the way which I'm guessing will be because your doing headers. You'll need to take the engine out of the mounts and jack it up as high as possible. Just take it up while having someone watch from above that your not crushing anything. Also I'd recommend getting a good oil pan gasket kit that includes the small plastic studs that'll hold up the new gasket while your putting the pan back up. Just take your time and it'll take some wiggling to get the pan out. If you have any type of higher milage you'd be a lot better off to just put in a new oil pump while your in there. Good luck and PM me if you need anymore help.

I broke the dipstick tube off of my old 340 Dodge. I believe they all are the same in that only about 1/2 inch of tube slides in the hole. I took a dent puller and screwed it into the hole and jerked it out. You might could get a wood screw in it and pull it out with a pair of pliers. I hope this helps.

Sorry.... The pan will come off if you use a motor hoist to hold it up and unbolt the motor mount, remove the starter, remove the inspection cover, remove the y pipe, and remove the oil pressure sender (unless you want to break it like I did and not know it). Should slip out with some help.

The LT1 dipstick tube goes in 2 to 3".... so long that people with 4-bolt main conversions often have problems with the main cap interfereing with the tube. I'd certainly try pulling it from outside. Threading the right size screw into the end of the tube and pulling as you suggested might be worth a try.

Sorry for the vague description, yes it is an LT1 in a 96 TA. The headers are already installed, so I can see it's going to be a bitch. I already tried pulling it from he outside using a screw-like thing with no luck. I suppose i'll try that again though, seems like it's worth another shot.

I would use a tap and die set..... the tap will reverse thread into the remaining material and you should be able to pull it out once it gets a firm bite into the metal.
