  • Traction control

Just bought my dream car yesterday. A beautiful 96 WS6 6spd.
I have test driven a 94 and 95 TA 6 spd before. They would spin in first. My 96 will not spin the tires in first with the clutch out. It pulls as strong as I would expect otherwise. Do I have a problem or traction control, or is traction control my problem?

It's the traction control. I don't know how you would do it with a clutch but if you touch the brakes, the ABS circuit will overide the traction control and it will go. Does anybody know how to put a switch on these cars to disable the traction control?

That being the case, is traction control always an option, or is it standard starting a certain year.

Traction control was an option for LT-1 cars, but not available in the WS6. You should not have traction control if it is a genuine WS6. It wasn't available on the WS6 until 98 and later with the LS1.

My traction control can be disengaged with a toggle switch similar to the door lock and power window switches right above the gearshift next to the Pontiac emblem on the console. I don't think you have it, if it doesn't have that switch. Also, look for a black plastic covered box on the driver's side of the intake. Also, when the traction control is on, and you hit it hard, the car really hesitates, and you know it. I really hate this thing, and I plan to eliminate it when I rebuild the motor.

Your car could have a number of things, a worn clutch, a dirty filter, etc. I would start looking at all of the maintenance stuff, plugs, wires, coil, opti, filter, etc.

Other than the WS6 label below the taillight, how would I know if it is a genuine WS6. It has the WS6 wheels and ram air. I know all of it could be added, but I think it is genuine. Is their something in the VIN that would indicate the WS6 option?
Also, getting them to spin from the start with the clutch, there doesn't seem to be a traction system freaking out trying to control the spin. And they spun freely on the wet pavement.
Would appreciate a website that decodes the VIN
            Thanks

There is no dedicated number in the VIN for a WS6. There is a decal in the driver's door jamb that contains all the parts service codes, It will be in there.
