  • Throttle body question

I am thinking of putting on a 52 mm or 58 mm throttle body on my 95 TA.The motor internals are stock but it does have powerdyne 6psi boost, headers, and flowmaster.Would the throttle body help enough to justify the $300.00 or do i need to leave it alone.Ive also heard that if i go with a 58mm i would have to change injectors.Im about out of money so i was looking for some cheaper ways to get more hp.Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

A larger throttle body would probably help your setup. Whether its worth $300 depends on the exact power level. You could reduce the cost by having your stock TB bored to 52mm. There are several sources for that mod.

A 58mm might be a little too large, and would require that you bore out the openings in the front of the intake manifold, since they are only 52mm. Some people have managed to open them up with the manifold on the car, but I wouldn't recommend it. So, for a 58mm TB, you are talking more like $400, plus the cost of removing the intake and having it bored out.

Another alternative would be the 54mm TB avialable from AS&M. That will work with the stock intake ports.

In any case, you don't need to get larger injectors just because you installed a larger throttle body. Just because a 58mm TB might be rated to flow 50% more than a stock TB doesn't mean that's what you will get simply by bolting it on your intake. There will be a very slight increase in peak air flow at WOT, simply because the larger throttle bores will reduce the pressure loss of the air flowing through the TB. But the increase in air flow shouldn't require new injectors.

One possible exception would be if you were getting a huge pressure loss accross the TB and that was what was pushing your boost up to 6psi. If you opened it up in that case, you might see a little more air flow for the same boost level. How are you adding the extra fuel for the blower now - FMU? extra injectors? programming of stock PCM with larger injectors?

The blower kit came with an external fuel pump and regulator. It sounds like the 52 mm would be what i needed. They claim 10-15 hp gain, if that proved true i think i would be interested. The car is also programmed with hypertech programmer if that matters. If anyone has anymore ideas im all ears. Thanks for the response.

You car go with the 52mm TB. Its your best bet. The 58mm is to large, unless your pushing 500+ HP or somewhere in that range. It is possible to bore out the intake manifold without removing it (that if you where going to install the 58mm). Just one word of advice, "unless your really good with a grinder, dont try it." It toke me and my buddy 2 hours to bore it out but I must say it came out pretty good. No major difference in power gain but hey, what else can you do when you are in need to instant power, and have the money to fund it. A 52 TB and a CAI, and that thing will be loud up front.ha ha. Good luck

I have decided on the bbk 52 mm throttle body.I have a tps air foil on my stock throttle body, will i be able to use it on the 52mm intake or is it needed?

The aftermarket TB's usually have the streamlined divider wall between the throttle bores machined into the body, and don't require an "airfoil". My Holley is like that:
