From an Ranger in the Striker Brigade out of Mosul
it has been crazy we have had our share of sporadic contact but the other day I think it was the 13 of Nov. We got in the mix for real. it wound up lasting 6 hrs. We were in this town of Avgani its west of Talafar. We went to this police station late the night before because it had been attacked and booby trapped so the battalion had our platoon come to clear it.
We did and then they wanted us to defend it until the police came back. So we stayed there all night and waited finally around ten am some cops showed up but they were acting weird so my squad went out to link up with them around the same time one of the vehicles thought they saw a gun with an AK down the road. so our squad walked down the road in that direction I walked point and we moved about 30 meters when all of a sudden the 50 cal of one of the vehicles opened up. I ran back to find out what was up and he said a guy came around the corner with a RPG. So our squad began to bound up the street a team on each side covering movement. then all hell broke lose. About 50 meters in front of me across the road a guy fires an RPG right at me. it was like slow motion I saw it coming then somehow it hit a street light in the middle of the road and skipped into the building and blew up about 20 feet in front of us amazing. So we opened up and at the same time so did they. I started lobbing grenades it was beautiful to see such chaos. but my guys were hopping
and popping before I even got the chance to start telling them. Our squad was a good 100 meters from the nearest vehicle and about 150 from the nearest squad but we were beginning to gain fire superiority. Then our vehicle 22 came flying past us with the 50 cal going cyclic it was a great sound.they drove right up to where the contact came from then all of a sudden we heard two rpgs hit our vehicle along with 2 ieds but the 50 cal kept going. IT turns out our squad pushed up an prematurely got the insurgents to start their 4 block ambush which caused minimal damage to our Stryker we had 2 flat tires and our 50 finally was destroyed. but this is because these fuckers have armor piercing incendiary rounds, on round penetrated the fifty and just so happened to blow out the timing bolt. we were hitting these guys with a shit load mk 19, 50 cal, 2 at4s, small arms and we even had cas come in with 2000 pound bombs but they didn't drop it because they wanted us to move back 7 clicks and we weren't going to give up our grown to the hagies. We never got a body count because they brought qrf in and pulled us out after 6 hrs because we had been going on about 72 hrs with out sleep.
