The car is OK,it may be a very decent performer, it isn't my idea of the next GTO.

That is the major gripe here,,,,,

The new GTO is more in-line with its heritage than you give it credit for.

The original GTO was spawned by throeing a big engine in the LeMans. It is meant to be a high-performance version of a family car.

If it looks like a Grand Prix -- well, considering its heritage, that's exactly what it is supposed to do. It's a high performance, big-engined version of a Pontiac family car.

RWD, 350 HP, LS1... I'm having a hard time finding things to complain about myself...

Like you, I don't get why people are slamming this thing.

Well, I think it is this era of tastes. My fiancee has a lot of friends in their 20s who think the '79 looks like a stupid oversized car with balloon wheels; they all prefer Neons and Civics with a bunch of ground effects and graphics. I think there is a lot more to a car then the looks like the chassis and powertrain. The looks will change in short order. Also, that little metro thing posted as the next T/A is not indicative to what they came out with in the GTO. The GTO is a RWD, 350 hp, 6sp, beast that will get up and go. So?...it doesn't look all that flashy in its first iteration. Why does it need to? Personally, I think it will be pretty darn funny when these things hit the road, and start handing f-body owners there lunch at the track especially when they drop the LS6 in the thing.

If people were reading the press releases on this, they would realize that this is a trial car to see how they market in the US. Maybe they might bring them back to the states along with a Chevelle, Monte, T/A, Z28, and the RWD platform cruisers. ....if people take interest in them. Well, if we criticize, point fingers, and ridicule what they are doing, then perhaps they will s**tcan the whole thing and we can start driving Bonnivelles, Grand Prixs, LeSabres, and FWD Impalas like everybody else.

the pics of the GTO do not grab me, but I am goin to wait until they actually hit the street before I make my decision.....

first year, no question.....not gonna touch it.......beyond that, who knows......stylin, mods.....could be a different ballgame.....and it gives me time to figure out how I justify a GTO and a LT1 to my wife

                      Pontiac Site

I checked around the flash site. I like the true dual exhaust and the interior looks cool. The rear is reminicent of a Mustang though.

I'll buy a used one for my 6oth birthday LOL

Swimmingly !! Half the season so far has been rained out,did a bunch of changes to the car since last year[9"/4.11/Xtreme sway bar/Adjustable TQ arm/Maf ends] and not getting in enough track time to dial it all in and get used to the car.

I managed 12.500 in incredibly good air this spring with the 4.10/10 bolt and sice adding all the stuff to my car have since run 12.80s in hot afternoon races[150lbs heavier]will try and get to Napierville and get some night racing in and see what she does!!!!!

Glad to hear from you buddy!!!!!

My biggest problem, by far, is the cost of some of the new cars. I make what I think is pretty good money and have a cheap lifestyle, so I could probably run out and buy anything up to a Z06 and make the payments without having to eat Ramen noodles every night, but these cars all seem hugely expensive to me. $35k is a LOT for a car, and most of the new concepts and real performance cars are over that level, not to mention that the dealers are going to screw the buyers of the first 18,000 GTOs. For example: I stopped in at a Ford dealer last year to look at a T-Bird. It was on sale for $48k. The MSRP was $38k and the DEALER MARKUP WAS $17k!!! They were taking $7k off the markup and selling it for a mere $10k over list!!! THIS was their sale!!! Then I heard that T-Bird sales were poor...

I think the real appeal of the F-Body was that it was affordable, it looked like a bonafide sports car, and had good performance potential. A lot of the newer cars are missing on one or two of those points.

Off topic... but there's something to be said for a truck that can almost keep up with an SS or WS6 for around the same price.
You should see the face of an unsuspecting F-bod owner who thinks the "Lightning" on the side of my truck is just a badge and a body kit.

Guapo, in your opinion, what makes the Lightning hook as good as it does? That's what I want to know - how do they get the weight to transfer on those things on a hard launch??? Just curious.

                                Kevin,

I'm not sure... I'm not an engineer or anything, I just drive it. heh. But they don't seem to spin as much as you'd think they would. Don't get me wrong... if you stomp it from a stop, you're going to go sideways. But it's easy to controll, and once I get rolling a little, I can pretty much have my way with the throttle (within reason, that is) with just a little spin.
It's all FM to me. (Freaking Magic). I don't question the SVT wizards. haha.
