  • NFB- Dilemma. My old Jeep.....

....comes back to haunt me. I sold my 91 Wrangler a couple of months ago and I just heard from its new owner the other day. Now some background - When I had it, it had some blow by like most jeeps of that vintage, so I reringed it with the motor in the car, just pulling the head and oil pan, honing the cylinders with a drill hone. The cylinder walls were questionable, but I figured I would put the rings in and if it stops the blow-by im good to go. Well, I finished the job and drove it for a while and it ran great - no blow by! So, I sold it to a guy for 1500 bucks a couple months ago. It books for 2500, so it was a good deal for him.

Well, I got the call the other day and the guy said he blew the motor. He said that his uncle who works at the dealer said it would cost him 2500 for a used engine! He wanted his money back. Now, for all I know, he was beating the **** out of it and blew the engine. I explained to him that I have no legal liability to do anything for him; he purchased it as-is and even 1000 dollars under book. But, I also felt bad, that this happened. So, I offered to get a used engine for him and install it for 650 bucks. I will be making 150 bucks or so and it will probably take me a full saturday to do it. He said he would "get back to me". I think he should be jumping at this, cause im not gonna lose my shirt over it. 150 dollars for a days worht of work is a heck of a deal for him. I think this is reasonable.....what do you guys think?

He bought a $1,500 car. What does he expect, a bumper-to bumper warranty?

I'd tell him he is on his own. Sorry. I wouldnt spend a second thinking about it. You are way too nice.

If this guy was a close personal friend, I'd be inclined to help like you offered, but never for a stranger. He will just keep coming back to you every time it has a problem. Put your foot down and get rid of the guy now!

Yea, this is what I thought, but I feel bad that I just did the ring job and then the motor went a couple of months later......I dont mind helping the guy out, because I know how it feels from his end. When I bought my bird (for a lot more than 1500) I blew the tranny a month later....that sucked. I knew that was the risk of buying a used car though, so im torn as to how much to take care of this guy.

The powertech inline 4 or 6 are both very solid engines. How many miles did you have on that jeep to only sell it for $1500? Your saying you'd charge $650 and that would be a $150 profit so why not just tell him you'll locate him an engine for $500 and he can take it to a garage and have it put in. They have a huge engine bay and are easy to work on labor shouldn't be that bad from a garage. You have no idea what he did to the jeep and as you said its not your reponsibility he bought it for $1500 and thats a risk that is taken when a used car is bought.

Jeep only had 100k on it. It was a decent Jeep, and those that know wranglers, know that they are pricey. I can do the labor pretty easily and have the lift and eqipment to do the job. So, like you said, its not a bad job - probably a day. This is a good suggestion though.

That is a heck of a deal for $1500. I sold mine a year ago for 3900. It was a 91 but had the sahara package and the 6cyl and had 119k on the ticker. If your ever selling one for that again let me know I'm looking for another I've regretted selling it since the day the guy picked it up and drove off. Also its not your problem that is very kind of you to try to help the guy but I wouldn't go as far as pulling an engine and putting a new one in for him you have no clue what he did to it.

Oh BTW, that would be an excuse for me to drop in a V8.

I'm of the opinion that I sure want to buy a car from you as you provide warrenty on a 10 year old car. Seriously though, 1500 for a used car and the motor blows, crappy luck, but he got a good deal in the first place. Not a person on earth should think that you should pay for it. That guy is crazy and I would tell him where to go. Damn its USED! what should one expect?
