  • IROC-Z chip question

hey everyone, which chip is better 2 get? A hypertech or jet? Are there any somewhat cheap mods for the 350 tpi? I currently have 2 1984 z-28 camaros and now i have an 88 Iroc-z w/ the tpi. any suggestions for hp increases would be appreciated. jt

Honestly, neither. Those chips are nothing more than stock chips with just tweaks in the fuel and timing advance curves, which can help make more power, but not how they tweak it. I can honestly say that those chips are just overpriced "snake oil". I even own one myself, and it did nothing, absolutely nothing. All it does now is sit in my toolbox.

Now, with all of that said, you can make your own custom chips, and it's not even all that expensive. If you have a laptop, then you have the most expensive part. You just need an ALDL cable, laptop, PROM burner, software, and spare PROMs or chips.

There are some free and inexpensive mods for TPI motors. Some of the free mods are the throttle body coolant bypass, removing the baffles from the stock air box, descreening the MAF sensor if you have one, and porting or siamesing the TPI intake, runners, and plenum. Some inexpensive mods are a TPI air foil, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and K+N air filter(s). I know there's more free or cheap mods, but I can't remember them right now. By far, the best mod for our cars is to free up the intake and exhaust. The exhaust is pretty restrictive, and shorty headers, a high-flow cat, and a single 3" cat-back will do wonders.

Check out the Thirdgen.org message forums and technical articles, it's filled with all the info you could ever want to know about 3rd gen. F-Bodies, including how to add HP to a TPI and how to burn your own PROMs or chips. Check it out, www.thirdgen.org
