  • High Flow Crossflow 2.5" system

    Greetings,
I'd like to provide some information to interested F-body owners. Please visit the website

    http://forums.performanceyears.com/e...11&m=875109819

and view the photos of the 2.5" mandrel bent, high flowing, crossflow muffler and pipe setup being evaluated. The system was tested on a 70 Firebird but will be usable on Camaros with changes in the tailpipe tips being the only real required modification.

Thanks for your interest and feel free to email me with any questions you might have (thand@kc.rr.com).
    Tom.

    2.5"??

The standard for V8 performance exhausts is 3". The stock exhaust on a 93 or newer V8 f-body was 2 3/4". Some WS6 and SS models got a 3" exhaust stock.

2.5" would be a serious downgrade. Maybe I'm mistaken in what you are describing? Could you clarify?

It's a dual 2.5", so not too bad. Plus it's for 2nd gens.

Trace, sorry for not pointing out that this is specifically for the 70 to 81 F-bodies. These cars for years have been relegated to 2.0" or 2.25" crossflows or Flowmaster's 2.5" chambered muffler. It has been almost imposssible to find a mandrel bent 2.5" system that uses a crossflow/transverse muffler like these cars had stock.

So, it's a true dual system and the muffler has 2 inlets and 2 outlets then? The link you posted doesnt work for me.

Tracy, type www.performanceyears.com, go into the forums, into the Exhaust section then look at the one titled Crossflow Photos.

Very nice! It looks like great quality too. A picture is worth a thousand words.

2.5 is plenty for dual exhausts but why run them through one muffler and not use two?

                  94Form,
The typical dual muffler system with high flowing, under chassis mufflers, presents a problem when cars are lowered as they are these days. To be able to flow a lot of exhaust and do it relatively quietly with ground clearance has been tough to get but a system such as this will provide that if 2.5" pipes are suitable. For drag racing, three-inch, under chassis mufflers are the way to go but for today's lower cars, moving a high flowing muffler back to the stock location is beneficial.

You guys do know that all 1st gen camaros that came with duals had that same type of muffler and exhust. Its nothing new, they did it for the same reson we only have one head pipe..... ground clearence. However I think the stock setup only use 2.25 or jus 2 inch pipe all he way back. that type of a system will never work in a 4th gen due to the torque arm rear suspension.

You are right. Some had 2.00" inlets and 2.25" outlets but internally, they were around 2.00". Ground clearance was the name of the game. On Firebirds, when they used resonators, they were only around 3.00" thick to salvage what ground clearance they could.

From the Pypes Exhaust Company in regards to the Crossflow setup for F-bodies (2nd gen and potentially 1st gen)

"I promise this prototype system will be tested in December and I should have an answer on whether it is feasible to reproduce by mid January. In the meantime, Mike Z is taking pre-orders (no money up front required) because we need at least 15 of you who want this type of system to be able to justify putting it into production. So spread the word. You might need to check with the Chevy guys (if we can't get 15 Pontiacers by mid January). e-mail mikez@pypesexhaust.com "

If this system flows well, it is an answer to a prayer for many 2nd generation owners who desire a decent ground clearance. Years back, the only way to get a good flow was to hang a pair of turbo mufflers under the car , prior to the rear axle and that made lowering the car out of the question. I still managed to squeeze in ladder bars and true duals but the rear definately wasn't what could be considered low slung. Then again, mine was a street strip effort, not a corner carver. Have you thought about a chambered design using the same configuration? That would be a sweet sounding system.....

Hi Joe and thanks for your comments. As a matter of fact, Stainless Works 1-800-878-3635 (www.stainlessworks.net) sells a dual, chambered muffler for F-bodies but it is all st. st. and not sure they offer it in 2.5".
They too did the same thing to get a straight shot through both mufflers without any obstructions (other than the chambered indentions).
