  • Need Help Really Bad Please...

ok i took my car into my local trans shop to see whats going on with the rear. I have already blown the transmission and the mount on the new one it self so i now have a poly mount. anyway my rear end has been making some noises for a while now. they are telling me this

the clutches are gone, the crosspin is spinning around in the housing, the side gears are pitting. He says the ebarings will need to be replaced. The whole carrier/posi are shot and need to be replaced.the ring and pinion obvisoly as well when they took the cover off the fluid came out all metallicy?? . he is saying this is a basic overhaul short of axles.

Now im currently strapped for money in a big way. They are quoting me $1800 for labor and parts!!! does this sound steep or what? what should i do here guys am i being taken for a ride. I know a complete posi unit only sells for 3-400 on jegs or so. He then goes on to say well then theres labor and i said well i can't take that long to set the backlash and do all the stuff. He said i would also need to gets pins, install kits the cluthces and bearings. Please help me.

sounds expensive, Im no expert on the 4th gen posi but to get my third gen 9 bolt which is pretty rare and hard to get parts for re built, the price breakdown was as follows:
500 USD for full posi Internals New or 450 rebuilt (any gear ratio).
150 CAN for all saels bearings etc.
    250 CAN labour
so at the time in USD it was about 850ish
    or 1000 Canadian.
    so I feel its expensive.

Check out the prices for a whole rear axle from a local wrecking yard, you can do the swap yourself for a few hours of work.

the carrier bearings were bad on my daughters jeep front axle. So I bought a complete front axle, right down to the brake rotors for $375, it took me about 4 hours to change out, and there is no setting of gear lash, or anything inside other than fresh gear lube, and new poly bushings.

This will get you back on the road for the least money, obviously you can upgrade to your wallets content.

I'll second that. It's time to scrap your current rearend and find a used one.

For $1,800 you are approaching the cost of a 12-bolt rear axle assembly. The 12-bolt would be MUCH stronger than the stock 10-bolt, and a much wiser investment for that kind of money.

However, if you are on a budget, get a complete 4th Gen rear axle out of the bone yard, as indicated in the posts above. I know I sold mine (stock 3.42's, 50K miles, new bearings at 30K miles) for $300, and I thought that was a bit more than I should have got for it. You should be able to find something closer to $200. Install is a breeze.... use the 12-bolt install procedure on my website.

I've gotten many quotes on rear end rebuilds and most posi's seem to run $1200-1800, and i know the guys at the tranny shops pretty well. Those prices arent for f-bodies, but shouldnt be much different.
I did the same and got a junkyard Chrysler 9 1/4 for my truck, but the clutches in that one arent in the best shape. The only real risk you run getting a used one, but if youre not racing its the best way to go.
