  • Questions About Custom Twin Turbo System

Today I was looking at banks twin turbo systems and drooling over them because of the awesome concept of a twin turbo z28. I really got to thinking then I though "man why waste money when I can do this myself." I basically know how a turbo works. This is what i was planning on doing. 1st get two identicle turbos off of ebay for a couple hundred dollars. 2nd I have a friend that can make anything from metal, he is a great machinest and he could make the manifolds. 3rd we would run the tubes to the intake and get some cone filters for the turbos. The last part I have figured out is connect it to my pipes, take off my cats and my "blow master." Ok, now for the actually question. How do I run the water/oil lines that lube the turbo how do I rig up a blow off valve, and how to I hook up a boost controller. I THINK that this will work but im not all that sure. If it does work I want to run low boost untill I can get low compression pistons and untill I get the suspension and stuff that can handel more power. Tell me if you think this will work and if it wont work what things am I leaving out.

Well you better redo the fuel system, make sure you sort out the ignition system maybe with a boost retard amp, and find some way to tune it all once you're done. You are also going to need an intercooler up front.

        My advice is this:

You are asking for trouble trying to piece together a system like this by yourself. There is a certain "fun-factor" and sense of accomplishment in doing mods on your own, I know because I have done pretty much all my mods by myself... But an entire turbo system? No way.

If you want to take on the challenge because you know how to do it and you want fun and challenge involved in it, then good luck. But a "cheapest way possible" turbo setup is asking for BOOOOOOMMMM!!!!!

The idea of how a turbo setup works may seem fairly simple.....but it has taken turbo manufacturers and speed shops specialiazing in turbo systems lots of R&D to get all of the parts right. Headers have to fabbed within close tolerances, wastegates and boost controllers must be of high grade quality, hotside and cold side piping diameters must fall within very tight tolereances, fuel system has to be upgraded as well as modified, ignition system has to upgraded, etc., etc..

You might save yourself a couple g's and you would be able to tell everyone you contructed your own turbo system.......but in the long run that extra $2,000 you would have spent going with a profesionally contructed kit will be worth every penny. Installing a professioanlly made kit yourself is another thing.

Turbo Technology Inc. and STS both make very nice kits. The STS rear mount turbo is a very, very nice setup contrary to any flase negativity you may have heard. And for the price os the STS, you can't beat it.
