Today I got to take a ride in a 02 SS convertible. The car is dead sexy but im sorta disapointed at the performance. I mean it was fast like any f-body but all I hear is how ls1's are superior to lt1's. He only went like 90 and im pretty sure I could stay with him at that speed. Im sure he would stomp me on high end cause thats the ls1's thing. I was just shocked on the acceleration, it didnt seem to snap your head back like mine does. People have told me that mine is a fast lt1 but i dont know. I would take the SS anyday though its one of my dream cars along with a 69 SS with a 427.

Was it an auto? Converts are heavier, and so are auto's. That combo doesn't make a very mean SS. They don't feel faster, but they are, probably by a couple car lengths.97 Chevy 'Raro Z28 M6- Ported & Polished LT1 heads,beehives,1.6/1.94 valves, 226/231 custom cam,K&N FIPK, 94-95 BBK shorty's,ORY,Magnaflow Catback,no cats,BMR LCA Relocation Brackets,Lower Control Arms,Adjustable Panhard Bar,Eibach Pro Kit,SPEC Stage 1,Walbro 255 Fuel Pump,30LB Injectors,Pro 5.0,Short stick,MSD 8.5's,NGK TR55's,LT4KM

my LT1 has only lost two one cammed LS1 and that was at top end. @ 130 he pulled almost two lengths. i've stayed in front anywhere from 1/2 lenght to 1 1/2 lenghts on mild moded 6 pd LS1's f-bodies(exhaust - lid - etc). for some reason the only f-body that took me out by 1 lenght under 100 mph was a cammed 1996 LT1 firehawk withcan't wait to get my heads - intake - throttle body ported and cc 306 installed this spring
then i'll be looking for that cammed LS1 to see if the outcome changes....
not to say that i would mind having a 2002 sunset metallic SS cammed with a 6 sp and t-tops............

The verts are in fact heavier. Could have been the driver too. Stock vs. stock, LS1's are quite a bit faster than the LT1's. Put a few bolt-ons on the LS1 and good bye LT1.

LT1's have feel like they have more power in the seat of your pants since the torque comes on a lot quicker. I drove my brothers 99 Z28 M6 home for him when he bought it and thought the whole way that I'd kill him him in a race and that definetly was the other way around. When we were both stock I could hold even with him till about 65 then he'd just pull on me like I was sitting still. We raced once to 100 and I hooked a little better and had him by a good half of a car till I hit around 60 and he ended up taking me by a good 2 car lengths. LS1's are an amazing engine and up top will walk a stock LT1 any day of the week. LS1's also seem to really wake up when you put on a few boltons like FastTA said.1994 Firebird Formula, M6, Fan switch, 160 thermostat, Pacesetter LT headers, Morosso CAI, TB bypass, True duals.

The perception that the LS1 is some kind of slouch on low end torque is simply wrong. The GM data for the Corvette versions of the LT1 and LS1 show very little difference between the 2 engines, up to 4,000rpm.... then the LS1 leaves the LT1 in the dust with an increasing torque curve vs. the LT1's declining curve. But in no way is the LS1 "shy" on low end torque.
The LS1 outpowers the LT1 by 40-50HP, from bone stock, through the most potent levels of power adders. Its simply a better engine, and anyone who feels otherwise is in denial.

But I will give you that the LT1 sounds better for sure. I had 2 LT1s before this LS1 - they did not feel all that different - my buddy bought my last LT1 - my LS1 beat it up pretty bad 0-85 or so - close until 45 MPH or so.

Much depends on the car and the driver. I've seen times all across the board that do suggest that stock for stock, the LS1s pull away in 3rd gear. Until then, it's fairly close. Add bolt ons and the whole picture changes. Put a good set of heads and cam that flow similar to an LS-1 and the times will be similar.
