I recently bought a 98 z28 with the 6 speed. It seems that the car doesn't want to go any faster than 115 on the dot. In 4th gear its running at about 5700 rpm and it feels like im hitting a rev limiter I shift into 5th and 6th and run into the same thing. I havent read anywhere about a speed limiter but i dont think that there is anything wrong with the car???? Help please I have been greatly disappointed that i an only go 115.

What tires are on your car? If you don't have "Z-rated" tires, you have a speed limiter, with the limit defined by the limit of your tires.Fred

Z top speed
I had a 2000 Z with a 6 speed and just checked the dealer brochure.... standard tires are not Z rated and there is a comment in the fine print under the tire specs that say top speed may be limited due to tire limitations, see dealer for details. I have never seen a Z delivered with other than the Z rated tires, but since they were an option (base tired I think are H rated), its quite possible the car you acquired originally had the base tire combo, so it has a speed limiter in the computer. Computer change or reprogramming should fix that.
Anecdotally, since I wasnt there, it is reported that a few Camaros delivered to a state police had the "wrong" tires and thus a 108 MPH speed limiter a few years back. They were returned to GM to get the right parts on them. Also, the Michigan State Police runs a testthan the Z rated tires, but since they were an option (base tired I think are H rated), its quite possible the car you acquired originally had the base tire combo, so it has a speed limiter in the computer. Also, the Michigan State Police runs a test of police package cars each year and the LS-1 camaros they tested generally topped out at 159 (1999 model) and 160 (2000 model). The police camaro is a Z in RS trim.

I also have a 2000 Z-28 that was delivered with other than Z-rated tires. When I talked to the local tire dealer about a flat I had, he was shocked that it didn't come with z-rated tires. Gonna be upgrading soon to 17" wheels and 245/50/17 tires so will solve the problem then. May need to do something about the rev limiter on mine though too2000 Z-28 Convertible, neutral leather interior and neutral top, hotchkis STB, SLP Bowtie Grill, WhisperLid, K&N, cold air induction
