  • oil consuption (LS1)

a friend of mine mentioned to me that LS1's were using oil when running above 3000rpm. He thought that there may be a recall or a TSB out on it. Hav eyou gents heard any such reports?

He also mentioned a recall on the six speed tranny. The recall pertains to shift fork bendage.

    Thanks in advance.

LS1s used a "twisted" ring design that was supposed to help ring sealing at WOT. What happens is that many owners run the engines at light throttle openings above 3000 rpm and the rings don't seal as well, thereby causing an increase in consumption.

Yup. The pistons are removed, a mild surface hone on the walls and a different designed ring is installed on the piston. Then basic reassembly.

No... a TSB is not a recall. A Technical Service Bulletin is a "how to" on fixing certain technical problems. A recall is a mandatory fixing of problematic defects most often due to safety issues. Sounds like there isn't much of a difference, but there is. If you are looking for a way to get the work done for free, it's going to be tough. First, the car will need to still be under warranty, the problem with oil consumption will have to be documented and repeatable ... meaning you'll have to have the dealer do an oil change, 500 miles later you take it back due to low oil. They do another oil change, you bring it back in 500 miles with low oil again. It is at that time you hand the service dept a copy of the TSB and start complaining about this being a factory defect. Prepare to camp outside the manager's office door and plead your case. The problem most of the time is that unless the dealer has performed all the service, there is no previous service record and they will most likely try to brush you off. It will be a game of political chess, for sure. I have seen this exact scenerio go both ways. Some got the problem fixed, others got the brush off.

As far as the shift forks go, I can definitely vouch for there being a problem... I don't however, know of any recall on it.
