  • Foamy Power Steering Fluid?

We got our 1st cold snap this morning and when I started the car I heard a loud whine. I knew it had to be the PS Pump. I took my son to school and when I got back I popped the cap on the reservoiur(sp) and it was foamy. The pump was quieter after she warmed up. Is it time to replace it and if so how hard is it to do?

foamy fluid is the indication that there is air in the system, which in most cases, especially during temperature drops... just happens. check it in an hour and the foam should be gone.

the ps pump on our 97 Firehawk has whined since it was new, worse when cold... its got 72k miles on it now.... no problems with the pump. just make sure your fluid level is right...and keep driving.

Thanks Ken. It has gotten quieter. I drove it to work. The fluid level was good.

Drain the resevoir and replace with power steering pump conditioner. I did this on my 97 TA and my 98 Tahoe, and it made both of them hush.
