Fred, you're right...the 4.56 gears were an "option" because they, and all the performance mods listed in my post above, were in the "Chevy parts catalog". The mag chose those things to do because they were still considered factory options. The only aftermarket mod was the whole suspension/traction kit, to work with the drag gears. The reason why they had to list "mods" they did was because they borrowed a Z28 from the Baldwin/Motion Group's Ed Simonin. They couldn't get their hands on one anywhere else. Then, they had to bolt up those things on this guy's daily driver Z28 (with 3.70s).
So, that means...I was right again lol j/k
I knew GM offered an extensive list of options on the 1st Gen Zs, but geez...they really went for the gusto. Wish they still did that today.
My dads z was a not option car.....
No crome
No Cowls hood
No Spoiler
No fold down rear seat
No AC (No Z28's came stock with AC)
No Wood Steering wheel
Ascot Silver with Black Z28 strips, Black standard interior, Brand new off the lot.
Wait, he did have the console gauge option but that was it
*Edit*
It was a 1969 Z28..... werent there only 602 1967 Z28's made? None of which had strips or badges stock.

You're correct on the number and the bare-bones direction they went with the 67 Z/28, but it did have badges standard I believe. 4 of them...one on the grill, center in place of the bow-tie, one behind each wheel on the front fenders and one on the rear on top of the gas filler cap. If I am wrong, please correct me on this...I love the 1st Gen Z/28s with a passion and would like to know more on them than what I already do.
Well i would not underestimate this lil motor and car.... by no means i would not be amazed if it would win, this car weighs around 3200-3300 lbs max it can rev up 2 7500rpm and it tops out at 140mph from "factory", and this motor was rated at 290hp lmao when u hooked it up to a dyno it would throw down numbers from 360-400bhp "stock"..... so a few goodies will wake it up some more all u need is gears and its over i donno if its go the muncie in their but if he does.....then thats a sweet como hes got and this car has been at the strip with stock street tires (from 69 mind u) and has layed down 13.5's by being tuned perfectly oh and it was stock with exhaust manifolds by the way, and yes u could even get the cross ram manifold which came with two holley's and some long tube headers that were sitting in the trunk when u left the dealer and moct of these cars came with high gears from factory but u could get them with 4.10's as a factory option, and to answer a few more questions, the 67 z/28 had no decals stating it was a Z/28 anywhere only in 69 did it have them and their was 609 67 Z/28's were built some did have racing stripes. the 302 was built "only" for the trans am racing series because it required the motor to be less than 305cid, but the rules were that whatever the race cars were running it had to be availabe to the public and could be bought from any dealer so thats y these cars were monsters it was basically a race motor in a daily driver. maybe this will clear some stuff up if any1 has any questions then just ask, and i know my stuff i own one of these gems and have researched everything about them and i wish mines had the 302 .
P.S when will we be seeing an update seeing what went down and who won and what happened ?

The 67 and 68 Z/28s didn't have any badges??? I could've sworn the 68s did for sure, esp. since I've seen GM dealers online selling 68 Z/28 badges (not sure what the big difference was between those and the 69 ones, but the part #s were different and the red looked darker on the 68...could've been lighting). I could've sworn the 67s had them too. I'll have to dig up some of my dad's old books and look...wouldn't surprise me if I was wrong though. Was it at least an option for the badges in 67?
All this talk of the 1st gens has me really missing my 67 RS/SS 396 4 speed. That was a red/black solid lifter 396, muncie 4 speed and 4:10 gears. That one was a screamer. It had the hideaway headlights, cowl hood, no A/C though. Not really the best for Florida. The swing out wing windows for 67 did help somewhat but it was still swealtering in the summer. Man, would that car rip.
Sorry guys. I've been trying to post something since the original day but my computer hasn't exactly been behaving. I typed up one huge post and before i could submit it, a pop up came and deleted it all. Then that happened once more. Well, to sum it up, i found a link with some info on 1st gens. It had his car listed as running 15.12 in the quarter. I'm DYING to race him. Even if i lost i could care less but he refuses. Not only does he not want to race his car but he just had it rebuilt so it needs to be "broken in". He tryed showing me the power that it had before it was rebuilt but i just didn't feel it. It was like me flooring it in my car while doing 25MPH in 3rd gear only with more noise. It's kinda like Jerry Seinfeld's comedy- boring, overated and makes you wait for something that just doesn't ever come. I'm dying to go out in a few different muscle cars. I've heard that they were underrated by most muscle car fans but most actual tests show just the opposite. My stepdad's car attracts a ton of attention. Almost as much as my dad's Viper did only rather than being kids that have watched one too many rap videos, they're older guys who's attention you don't mind. One day at a car show, a group of about 5 guys walked over to my stepdad's car. Then this one guy started talking about every possible thing there was to know about the 69 Camaro. The thing that makes me weary about the "underated horsepower" of musclecars is that- A) Tests often show that they're actually overated as the motors were often rated with the power they produced before they were actually even in the cars and B) Muscle car fans can't come to a consensus. People have told my stepdad everything from his car having 350 horsepower to 475 horsepower. Alright, maybe auto manufacturers did lie about horsepower ratings........30 years ago. I think that by now, they'd admit to something. Some day i will race my stepdad, he just doesn't know it yet lol. Right now my stepdad has me under his insurance so that i can collect some money and get going. He's giving me a running start so to speak. I'm really appreciative of him doing me this favor so i don't do anything like street race or speed no matter how badly i want to because i know that this will raise his insurance. I'm not really into breaking the law anyhow but if i pull up to a light and a 69 Mustang or an Oldsmobile 4-4-2 pull up to the light, it's on! (69 and 70 are pretty much the only year Mustangs that i REALLY like. The Fox bodies weren't too bad and the newer ones are pretty cool but i'm a GM fan). I'll try and get some pictures of his car posted and i'll keep you guys updated. Thanks again.
