So I was driving in the snow today and I had the car all warm and toasty. After about 40 mins of driving the winshield wipers stop in mid-stroke. I turned them off and they went to the off position. I turned them on and the came up to the highest point of the stroke and then stopped. They won't go back down! I checked the fuse and it's fine. There isn't any ice blocking the motors. Could they have burned out from melted ice getting into the motors? Their entire purpose is to move water so I figured that they are supposed to get wet. Also, the winshield washer is spraying anything even though the reservoir is full and the ice was cleared from the spray-thingies. Any ideas aside from a new motor. Are there 2 motors or 1 for the windshield wipers?

The motor is going out. Get a new rebuilt at Autozone, about $50. The washer motor may not work if the wiper motor doesn/t. I really can't remember on that though, so check hoses for a lose connection or frozen spot. Take a pin and clear the nozzels from calcium that may have built up in there.

Similar Problem
Your motors are starting to go out. I had a similar problem with my 94 Sunbird. It will take a while for the motor to go out but when it sticks just keep turning them on and off to cycle your arms.95 Beater Bird

I am not sure how relevant this is, but I thought it would be worth mentioning. The motors have to be controlled by a module or relay. My 96 Crew Cab had a recall notice because the wipers could do exactly as you describe. Right before the truck went away, the problem popped up. It seems as though the control module or relay was subject to water contamination and was supposed to be replaced under the recall. It might just be worth checking out as I don't have the schematics here with me at work.
