  • is it just me or is this a waste of money?

my friend (who is only 15) just bought a 2002 V6 mustang about 6 months ago. now he has it in his head that he wants to upgrade, so he's looking at buying a V8 5.0 liter GT-40 engine for his car. i haven't looked into this but i'm sure that's he's going to need a new tranny, suspension, and probably anything else that moves. this is all to go from 190 hp to 340 hp or something like that. the funniest part is that it's all going to cost him ONLY $9,000. Now i think that i could find a cheaper way to gain 150hp or he could sell his car and put that money and his $9,000 together and get a better car. if anybody else thinks this is a horrible idea i would like to hear it.

Ironic, that is what Steeda does. Your car starts out as a base mustang, they take out the drivetrain, sell it off and replace with the good stuff. Stealthy.

as a friend its your job to convince him its not worth the money and to buy and f-body with an 8 in it! If he sticks with the stangs tell him its easier to buy a new one with an 8 already in it, and if he wants the stealth look take off all the gt emblems and such and put the regular stang emblems on them which represent the 6 cyl.

I'm assuming you mean a 5.0 Mustang GT engine, not a 5.0 GT-40 engine seeing as how the GT-40 (which is now called the Ford GT) will have a 5.4L superchared engine putting out 500hp.

Next, Ford has not used the 5.0L in the Mustang since the switch of the body style in 93 or so. They still were using the 5.0 in certain vehicles (the Mountaineer) comes to mind, so I guess they still make them, but $9,000 seems way too expensive for one of those.

if he's 15.......... i doubt he has the resources..both mental and mechanical... or the money..... to do something like that. not to mention...it is stooooopid. he will spend more doing that than he would selling the car and getting a gt.

Yeah, that's a waste of time and money. Tell him to sell the V6 car and get a V8 car. He'll be much happier in the end. Or tell him to put a supercharger on the V6 and he'll be close to the power of a V8.

Well, my first thought here is a 15 year old with a car like that. Where are the parents? Too much car for someone with NO experience.

I know a guy with a V-6 stang who supercharged it. Still a costly job, but not as costly as what you desxribe. Mention it to him. I know they make kits. When I saw this guys stang and heard the blower, but saw V-6, I had to see it to believe it. Popped the hood and there it was, a little V-6 and the V-8 sized blower sitting right there.

                          just a kid

I remember being that age. I did just what your friend wants to do. The project was a 2.8L auto 1986 camaro with 32K on it. WHAT A NIGHTMARE. Every moving part and even non moving ones like the radiator needed replacement. In the end it was a stout 5.7L carbeurated Camaro, BUT it would had been cheaper to just trade up to a 5.7 IROC and then I would had gotten the 16' wheels and all the other goodies.

Tell your friend not to waste his money.

The supercharged V6 Mustangs are not bad. It definitely will keep up with the V8 cars, and the insurance will be much lower on a non GT Mustang.

Anyhow, I hope he has some common sense about driving. Young drivers with no skills and a fast car all compile a deadly combination. Stay safe!!!

just my experience talkin, but my first car was my mom's GTA...I got it when I was 17, but until then I drove my pops Ranger (piece of dog poop)...but when I got to 17 and my mom bought her honda...the GTA was mine and how sweet it was! Those two years was sorta like training...I tell you somein...if I had gotten the GTA when I was 15...I'd probably wouldn't be here right now. Even for a V6 Stang...15 is too young, he has no clue how to drive...and worse yet, I'm willing to bet he thinks his V6 can do amazing things...like outrun V8 and killing himself in the process.
