  • Lifter needle bearings

Have a new set of the Comp R lifters. A can feel a little resistance on a few of the rollers, like the needle bearings are binding a little, even after soaking them in oil.

Anyone else had this problem, or think I should get replacements? Or is this common?

Hmmm... I also had one lifter that didn't want to go into the lifter bore - kind of tight. Tried a different lifter and it goes in fine, so it's not the bore.

Think I need to call Comp on Monday. So much for firing it up this weekend.

Their should be absolutely no resistanace within the roller wheel bearing. If there is, send them back. The last thing you want to do is flat spot a needle bearing and grenade your lifter.

Traditional SBC and LT1 lifter bores are machined to a "target" bore of .842" from the factory, however lifter bores have been reported as varying from .8411" to .8432" and possibly more or less. This occurs because of "stacked tolerances". This occurs when a factory block being machined is passed from machine to machine during the building process. Each machine may only be "off" by a few ten-thousandths, but when you start adding them up from machine to machine it can amount to a substatial tolerance differentiation.

Chances are it was not the lifter's OD but rather your lifter bore was either asymmetrical or was not machined to a like tolerance amongst your other 15 lifter bores.

But the same lifter was tight in all of the bores. If I tried a different lifter, it fit fine.

nothing against comp, but sounds like you got a bunk set. when they send you the new set, dont be affraid to ask them to hand check them before they ship them out.

Put a mic on all the lifters. If that one has a signinficantly larger OD, send them back to Comp. Let us know how that process goes if you do send them back.

Talked to Comp and I'm getting a new set. Bought new ones to get them out today, and they'll credit me when the other ones get back to them. Helpful guy I talked to - went smooth so far!
