The CC306 cam is ground on technology that is over 20 years old. The CC306 is effectively all bark and no bite. There are much, much better cams available for LT1's that will provide much more power, much better idle characteristics, and better overall driveability.

The CC306 is listed as 230/244 @ .050", .510"/.540", 112 LSA. With that much spit in the duration and that little of lift, the CC306 is a very choppy cam that is very soft down low. The nose radius and flank rates of this cam are also off in relation to the LSA and lift. In addition with a 244 exhaust valve duration and .540" of exhaust valve lift on a 112 LSA, you are going to have a significant overlap without the effective intake or exhaust lift to support it or the intake duration to support it.

But lets look at this in even more deatail.

There are a few ways to calculate degrees of overlap. I will use the advertised duration and lobe separation angle method since I do not know offhand the specific IVO or the EVC timing of the CC306 camshaft.

First you add the advertised intake and exhaust duration together. Then you divide that sum by 4. Then subtract the LSA. Then multiply that by 2.

    290+307 = 597
    597/4 = 149.25
    149.25-112 = 37.25
    37.25 * 2 = 74.5

So the total valve overlap is approximately 74.5°. Like mentioned above, the profile of this cam cannot effectively support the overlap. Thus you end up with a rough cam that doesn't make really good power for what it is.

If you want to stay around this size cam, there is a popular grind R&D'ed by Combination Moptorsports, the TN-230XL. It is listed as 230/236 @ .050", .544"/.555", 112 LSA. This cam will make better power, idle better, and drive better.

I think I have decided to go with a lloyd Elliott(sp?) head cam package. The LE2 to be specific. The #'s seem excellent, and the price is right too!

LE1 cam pulls from 2000 to 6200 RPM and should make 370-390 RWHP with matching heads, 30 lb injectors, 52 TB, 1 3/4 LTs, No cats, good tuning, etc. The heads are ported using stock valves, performance valve job, back cut valves, CM 612 springs, retainers and locks, milling, cleaning and assembly. These heads flow about 255/180 with a 195 cc intake port and stock LT1's flow about 215/150 with a 170 cc intake port.

Heads and cam are $1100 (plus shipping). This has the RPM range of the Hot Cam, CC 305, etc. but makes more HP and TQ over these cams through out the entire RPM range. This will work with any gear and converter but the track times will be better with a stall and some gear.
              -----------------------------------------------------
LE2 cam pulls from 2200 to 6500 RPM and should make 400-420 RWHP with matching heads, 30-36 lb injectors, 52-58 mm TB, 1 3/4 LT's, no cats, GOOD tuning, etc. The heads are ported and machined for larger Ferrea 2.00/1.56 valves, matching springs (Comp 987/977 springs and Ti retainers or Bee Hive springs and CM retainers depending on lifter type and EXACT cam specs), locks, locators, milling, cleaning and assembly. These will flow about 270/190 with a 205 cc intake port.
              -----------------------------------------------------
Heads and cam are $1650 (plus shipping) and will need GOOD tuning. This has the RPM range of the CC 306 cam but will make more HP and TQ at peak and across the board. The REAL difference will be the LE2 cam will make TQ in the 2500 RPM range and the cc 306 doesn't start until way past this.
              ----------------------------------------------
LE3 cam pulls from 2600 to 6800 RPM in a 350 (2300 to 6500 RPM in a 383) and should make 410 to 430 RWHP with matching heads, 36-42 lb injectors, 58 TB or mono blade, GOOD tuning, etc, etc, etc. These heads are ported, have larger valve seats installed and use 2.05/1.60 valves, Comp 29120 BIG Bee Hive springs and Titanium retainers. This type of RPM requires a lot more spring pressure and will also need Comp R lifters to handle the spring pressure.

Heads and cam are $1850 (plus shipping) and will need GOOD tuning. This cam is similar to the GM 847 cam as far as RPM range but makes about 10 more HP at peak and starts making HP sooner and makes more HP and TQ across the board. Needs at least 3.73 gears and 3000 converter to work well in a 350. Pretty much a racing cam for the 350 or a good street cam that will act like the LE2 in a 383.
              ------------------------------------------------
I am pretty intent on buying the LE2 package.... It states RWHP so that should be @ the rear wheels, but I also have an A4 with shorties... so the #'s will definately be lower. Not bad #'s though! People seem to be happy with the service and #'s. 11's are possible with the LE2 setup, and for under 2 grand....

2g's plus pcm tune, extra parts, HD timing chain, injectors etc...

Listen to the guys..... I've tried to talk several people out of using the cc306 and they went ahead and did it anyway. The end result was that they weren't happy.

Combination's Stage II h/c package will get you 400 to the tire with a 230'ish hydraulic cam. The Cloyes double roller would be a pretty good choice if you plan on going with a electric water pump since it would eliminate the water pump drive on the cam sprocket. Just tell that "whiteboy" Sam that Kevin told you to look into their Stage II h/c package. Have you considered upgrading to LT4 heads/intake? Sam will help to offset the cost of a LT4 h/c package if you send him your used LT1 heads/intake.

                    fatsTA,
what does the Combination's Stage II h/c package cost??
who sells it? What kind of rear wheel HP will i get with a LT4 convertion??
i've seen the LT4 convertion cost around $2,200 i'm sorry but who is Sam? how much will the used LT1 heads/intake reduce the cost of the LT4 kit?
                    thanks again,

I really couldn't tell you what the general public prices are, but call Sam and they will put together a comprehensive top end package for you at a very competitive cost. Maybe I was thinking of another thread, but I could have sworn that you mentioned Combination Motorsports. 702-798-8504 The amount of money that they offer youfor your stock heads and intake manifold will most likely depend on their demand for them.

That will all depend on the extent of your head porting and cam selection. Sam's number is 702-798-8504.

Generally speaking with a 230'ish cam, Stage II LT4 heads, port matched LT4 intake, and a 54mm TB, 400 RWHP should be easily obtainable.
