  • NFB: Happy to be alive!

Holidays were cool and all, but after my experience last night, the family is getting extra attention today (and many more).

After driving about 45 miles after work at 70MPH in the 94 S10, I am REALLY glad that the whole darn wheel decided to fall off when I was only going 25 over RR tracks in the last <1mile from the highway to my home. I'll get some pics when I go to meet the tow truck in a couple hours.

As Ken has wisely told us, flats are something to know how to handle. But I am afraid having the lower ball joint break and losing the whole wheel assy (wheel, hub, caliper, etc) at highway speed would have been not cool.

The wife did say something about that old truck getting too expensive to fix (177,000 I4 and needs a clutch too). I was kind of hoping my next new car would be a Vette (08 or 09). Looks like I might be shopping for something in the mean time. Loaded Canyon maybe, or other suggestions? Likely to be another compact truck, but who knows. No rice will be considered. Probably won't get a third V8 either.

Maybe I won't be such an a at work today too, it's way better than dead

You're lucky. Just for future safety, It's a good idea to regularly inspect things such as ball joints.

No doubt. Things looked fine 20,000 miles ago when I did the brakes and chassis lube. This according to the Chiltons guidelines ( I have the GM manuals for my other 2 cars). In October I got fresh rubber on all 4 and alignment (I can't do that for obvious reasons), looks like the shop missed a chance to try for some legitimate extra charges. Wish they would have said something about this. Heck, if it wasn't for the aligment, I usually take my wheels and Tire Rack rubber in myself. I just don't trust shops after so many bad deals. And if I have to stand around personally just to make sure they hand torque lug nuts, I may as well do it myself.

Just making excuses though. Your right. My bad. My negligence almost cost my dearly. Others learn from my mistake please.

        wow... lucky you are...

same thing happend to me in my commuter van 3 years ago. the tie rod end fell off at 20 mph comming to a light, the last light before we got on interstate 95 express lanes at rush hour.

yes, your right ...there isnt a whole lot of evasive tactics for loss of entire wheel assembly!
