  • 230 mph for $44k??

I was recently looking at the past Barrett Jackson auctions and saw Tony Stewarts old 1999 Grand Prix. His rookie car, including the motor and everything, went for $44k??

Granted it's a 1999 (they were only at ~680-700 RWHP that year compared to 770+ RWHP today), and it's not street legal, I find it a bargain to get a 230+ mph car for $44k. That is, unless the motor has an entire race on it.

Well, you could run it in exhibition at your local track, you could take it to car shows and increase turnout for the show (especially ones that the money goes to charity), you could charge dealerships a small fee and park the car out front bringing people in, or you could pull the motor, put it in your Pinto, and teach all the ricers that "stock" Pintos can whoop their $50,000, 200hp Honda

LOL I never thought about that
There are also "Vintage Stock Car" races, mostly at road courses, where you compete with other former Cup cars. I've also seen another class where there was a modified Viper, Z06, '60s Mustangs, and Bill Elliott's former T-bird chassis in it (not sure what motor it had though). But we all know it takes $$$$$ to compete and maintain the car.

I think I would go broke if I ever bought it lol.

But, I think the numbers are:
tires are ~$400 (correct me if I'm wrong) each
it uses 110 octane fuel, but does get about 8-9 mpg on "highway" runs. I know it gets ~4-4.5 mpg on unrestricted 9500 RPMs, and twice that mileage on 55 mph cautions laps. If this works out correct, 8-9 mpg ain't so bad for having almost 900 hp!

And how fast do the tires wear? How much does 110 octane cost by the gallon? lol

110 runs $5 a gallon down here. But I've seen a couple of cars on ebay with "detuned NASCAR engines" that ran on pump gas. The only thing you'd really have to do is get the compression down and retard the timing so you don't blow it in half. Should be around 400-500 HP on pump gas.
