Lately i've learned to admit something to myself. Something i didn't want to but i had to.....Fox Body Mustangs are awesome. They're super light, have enough aftermarket parts to make you want to puke and the parts are dirt cheap. It's been frustrating me lately that my car is so heavy. Not just because extra weight slows you down but it also gets you worse gas mileage and adds unecessary strain to your drivetrain. I've been obsessing over FastTA's Weight Reduction list but i don't have the mechanical knowledge to go pulling out A/C and ABS components or really anything else for that matter. Through this i came to realize something. GM did make a super light car that many people overlook. A car that i've seen people look at with lemon- faced disdain. I've gotten the response of "Blech!" from no more than mentioning the name....Fiero. While it's true that they might not be the most attractive of all cars, i was thinking about all of their possibilities at work today. They're about 2,700lbs. Drop in an all aluminum V8 and you do the math. Fiero motors are mid mounted so to the best of my knowledge, that should provide excellent traction as most of the weight is already near the rear wheels. No driveshaft to break, they already handle beautifully, they're selling for dirt cheap, no heavy electronic components or audio equipment to weigh you down, nothing. It's making me think. I don't have the money right now to do a motor swap/ tranny swap but maybe in the future, i'll make a beast of a Fiero. They're almost a full 1,000lbs lighter than our cars. That's rediculous. I should talk my dad into getting a Fiero with an LS1 in it. He wants something that will do wheel stands

Fox bodies are awesome. Wouldn't mind owning one myself, I've always like the 80's mustangs. Slow as dirt, but they look awesome. My buddy has an 8 second one, and his bro has a blown 10 second fox body.

However, you can't compare the Fiero to your firebird. Yeah it's lighter, it's got a tiny engine, tiny everything. Why pick a Fiero? If you're gonna do a swap like that take a Civic and swap the drivetrain and engine into that. Maybe an older RX7

The Fiero's motor is mid mounted so unless i'm wrong about this, that should provide better traction. You can still drop weight from a Fiero and make it even lighter (though the same thing could be said about any car). Still good ol' American muscle....that is after a motor swap lol.

Funny story today actually. I always rip on my buddy for being a Ford guy. He goes to test drive a 98 3L V6 Ranger, 57K, no 4x4 or anything, just junk. 9 Grand. Yeah, he's a moron. Anyway, he goes to test drive it, he gets on it and the trans breaks. No joke. He didn't have the balls to tell me. I went to pick up some parts at Ramchargers, and his brother told me Might sound like a jerk saying this, but that made my day.

I don't know about you guys but I drive a T/A because... it's a T/A. I didn't buy my car thinking it was the fastest thing on four wheels. I bought it because it is a gorgeous machine with enough power to satisfy me. I never understood why so many ppl want their daily driver to be the fastest car out there when there will always be someone faster... just make it fast enough for you. Well thats just my opinion but i can tell you If you are only worried about speed there are many other alternatives than fiero's and fox body's.

ws6drbob- i did the same, otherwise i'd have gotten a Mustang and dumped a ton of money into it. I love my Trans Am, it just bothers me that with my 350 cubic inches and 3,600lbs, i'm making 275 horsepower and that's not even to the wheels when these new Acuras, Nissans, etc are making almost as much with their tiny little V6's and weigh a lot less. Not much of a performance maching nowadays. I want something that can live up to it's name and 14's isn't what i think of when i think of when i look at my car. I was thinking of selling my car over the summer if i can find a good deal on an early 90's Vette but i'd be getting a 92 or 93 and from what i hear, that isn't the best idea as the The motors were a new thing and the optispark was horrible back then. They do weigh around 400lbs less though, they handle better, they're two seaters (which i like) and i really like the way the hoods open on them. I like my car a lot though so it'll be a tough call. Over the summer, it was a debate between my car and a '92 Twin Turbo Stealth. There was one in the paper with 67k miles for $6,500. I still wonder if i made the right choice.

Tough one there man. That was a steal. My buddy paid that for his 93 N/A. For that price you can get a newer F-body (95+). It's close though... AWD TT or RWD V8... The Stealth would have been a LOT easier to run 12's in though. Wouldn't have to drop 600 or so into the suspension just to grip up, etc... If I came across a deal like that I really can't say which way I would have gone (If I were you). I had my import "Forced" power, when I started looking for a new car, I wanted Chevy V8 all motor power. I have always wanted a camaro, so that was all I really looked into... I did look at a couple 300ZX TT's though...

Actually, if I were in your shoes, I'd have gone with the Stealth. I am an import guy at heart, and I love Mitsubishi/DSM. I knew buying another Turbo car woulda just been problems for me...

My project in is a 84 Fiero and the drivetrain from an 89 Cadillac Deville. A 4.5 V8 and 4 speed automatic. With some new mounts fabbed on the cradle, she goes right in. Fieros make awesome cars when a better powertrain is swapped. I'll eventually get to doing it, I've just got a full plate at the moment with the house and a few other things. The main consideration is going to be mating the electronics from what the motor requires to the ECM. Some even have conversion harnesses. Northstar V8s are another popular swap. There are a few running around with turbo 3.8s ala buick GN. Those are wicked.

I like all kinds even imports (the ones that are fast) like mitsubishi 3000gt vr4, 350z, 300zx tt, supra tt, dsms, wrx sti, and pretty much anything that is fast.

You know, it's weird. My mom, stepdad and i have all GM- My mom and stepdad drive Tahoe's, my stepdad has the 69' Z and i've had an '86 Monte, an '88 Formula and the Trans am. My grandma has an Explorer, my grandpa has a 98 Grand Marquis and my brother ( who lives with my grandparents) has some Ford van. My dad has a Ram (the cargo van, not the pick up)and he had the Viper, his mom (my other grandma) has a Stratus and my uncle on my dad's side has an Intrepid. The best part is that everything is coincidental too. GM, Ford and Mopar.

I personaly think that the 86 on GT fiero is a sweet looking car. the nose is formula firebird like in that it is pointed more and slanted towards the front of the car, the tail lights are very simular to the 89 formula and I like the slanted back end with the spoiler. Im not a fan of the early models.http://www.fiero.org/pix/fiero-r4.gif I also think its cool to put any V8 in there, very light car, big V8....we all can do the math.
