  • Need Cam suggestions

    ok,

I'm gettin ready to make a order somewhere online, gotta find who has everything I need. Anyways, I have a CSI(now CSR) electric water pump sitting here and I was gonna install it, and doing it the right way I'll have to remove the timing cover so at that point I might as well change the cam while I'm there. I can get my hands on a 383 rotating assmy. real cheap. So I'm thinking the 383 with a good cam to match it and a set of 3:73's. So here is my question.

What cam do you think would be good.

Also probably need a new timing set also, huh??

Thanks for any info in advanced.

That sounds like it'll be a pretty sweet setup. Any reason you're not gonna touch the heads and rocker arms also? Are you going to keep the car streetable or make it a trailer-queen? As for a place to go to get the parts, LM Performance is always good, but I've loved dealing with Summit since I first started ordering from them. Thunder Racing is pretty good from what I hear too.

I talked to my friend that has the rotating assm. and it is lunati forged crank and forged I beam rods, and it has blower pistons, which I might still put them in there since I do plan in getting a procharger, I'll just have alittle lower compression.

I'm tryin to find a used set of LT4 heads(ported or not), but I'll probably just port the lt1 heads that are on the motor. I have a spare lt1 block sitting here, so I get that one drill for the splayed 4 bolt. I'll probably get the bowtie rockers or something not too expensive.

No NEVER a trailer queen , unless it breaks at the track .

Anyone have any ideas on a cam for now. I'll be getting a different one for the procharger.

Richard, how much power you looking to make? Driveability? Will you be using LT headers? What about heads?

Hey BTW, I just used your technique to make the Torana black in the LS4 thread. It came out pretty good. You da man!

Hey man, The black came out looking good.

umm, as far as how much power I plan to make. as much as reasonably possible.

For the driveability aspect. It will be 97% a street car. MAYBE run down the 1/8 mile, 2-3 times. Just so I know some numbers.

I plan on gettin the Hooker LTs with the Y-pipe to go with it.

I'm gonna use the head that are on it and get them ported. I was lookin for a used set of lt4 heads and intake. but not many people sell them. So when I get the procharger I'm gonna get the LT4 conversion and get then fully ported.

Well, I was hoping you could give me some more specific info as to your setup. I need to know your target static compression ratio, extent and type of head porting, and stall speed. I'm gathering you are going to use the LT1 castings for now? How soon until you feasibly see yourself going to the the LT4/Supercharger setup?

                Umm,

Compression ratio should be around 9:1 with the blower pistons.

The extent of the porting will be mild, I'm not gonna go to crazy with these heads, as far as type, What are the different types??

Yes, I'm gonna be using the stock LT1 head that are on it. Which have been milled slighty.

Umm, I'm projecting the LT4/Procharger motor to be 4-6 months away.

Ok, I went and picked up the rotating assm. Here is some Pictures of it.

I'm asumming that the pistons are Lunati also, I know the guy like to keep brands the same.

Are those marks supposed to be in the piston head??

Just judging by the looks of the picture, but that would appear to be in excess of a -30cc dish. Richard, do you know the exact effective dish volume? Do you know what your compressed gasket thickness and gasket bore will be? Target deck height? .005"?

Take a brass wheel to those pistons.

I just measured one of the pistons and it is about 32cc, I say about cause I got 30cc in there was alittle air left and it started it leak out the sides, so it's about 32cc.

Gaskets thickness I don't know yet, I haven't even thought about gaskets yet, Same with the Gasket bore.

I just Mic'd the pistions and they are 4.030".

Mains on the the crank are 2.426".
Rod on the crank are 2.078".

Assuming you will be using the standard 1074 head gasket with a compressed thickness of .039" and a bore of 4.125, 55cc combustion chamber(after deshrouding and smoothing), and a -32cc dish, i figure your static compression ratio to be roughly 9.11:1.

                            Perfect for running lots-o-boost!!

Since you said you were going to get the LT4 heads fully ported and the ProCharger in just a matter of months, I would go ahead and assemble the motor with the blower already in mind. You will lose out on just a little power going with a cam ground for boost but then again you won't be making much power at 9.1:1 compression either.

Depending on your version of streetable, something like the Comp Cams TS-233XR should work great with your setup. It is spec'ed at 233/242 @ .050", .569"/.576", 115 LSA.

How much boost do you plan on?

On the street, whatever I can get away with on 93 octane, but when I go to the strip every once in a while I'll turn it up since I'll be runnin 116.

So since you said that I should just build the motor for the charger now, I'm asumming that the cam you said was for a charger, or no??
