  • What is the noise I hear when I shut the car down?

Every time I shut my car, I hear a noise from under the hood that sounds almost like a power drill Lasts about 2 seconds.. Like a whirring noise..

weird. I don't remember my 94 Formula doing this.

    anyone know what that is?

    thanks!

Mine did that when I had a hole in one of my vacuum tubes. It would suck in air after the motor was shutdown.

Look for holes or disconnected hoses.

If your fans are on when you shut the engine off, that is what you are hearing spool down.

I do believe it is...I laughed when i saw that for the first time, esprecially when i noticed the front tire is flat.

If that ever happaned to my T/A, i think i would do the same thing until the tranny exploded on me. Go big or go home is my motto

I don't think it's the fans or an air leak, it actually sounds like a dentist's drill going on.. And when I shut it down, it kinda sounds like it's powering UP as I shut it down, it spins for like two seconds, tehn dies down.. Weird.. I'm going to make a recording of it to help out with iagnosing

And about the avatar, yes, that's me in my 94 Formula (RIP) doing a burnout.

That's what it looked like after a blind man hooked a left across the lane in front of me when I was doing about 40mph and I t-boned him. His fault. Oh well.. We were all OK, his insurance paid me, I sold the wreck to someone building a track warrior, and I made out better then if it was whole All goood.

I know exactly the sound you describe. I've never even spent a moment figuring out what it was, but will do so when I get home tonight.

Yeah, I always forget when I'm under the hood to do some investigating..

Only the AIR pump runs at startup-not shut down. It would have to be operating outside normal parameters.

I would have to agree. It sounds like the air injection pump is receiving a faulty signal right as the ignition is turned off.

This would be the only sound I could attribute to a "dentist's drill."

I checked mine and it is the air pump. Just to check it, turn the key to the run position but don't start the car. Put you hand on the air pump and have an assistant turn off the key. You'll hear and feel the air pump cycle.
