  • LS1 build-up question

So, I'm sittin' here watchin' Horsepower TV (nothing better on TV lol) and they're diagnosing they're SS, project LS-Gun (shoot their writers, please!!). They trace the problem to a spun bearing and decide to send the crank out to be machined. Wouldn't it be a better idea to replace it? There were some pretty serious gashes in the bearing and crank. On a side note, I will say I learned some stuff on the LS1 and understand more why a lot of people like the motor. I just don't like the sound stock vs. a stock LT1 lol

Much depends on the physical damage. If it cleans up with a .010 cut, there should be no problem. It's alot cheaper than replacing the crank. If the machinist is a whiz and the damage isn't in the wrong spot, he even could offset grind the crank for a smidgen more stroke (stock eliminator legal) and pick up a few ponies.

If it was a boosted motor or maximun effort, yeah I would replace the crank and go one better with steel.

Gotcha. Definitely wouldn't do that with the GN. Personally, I would rather replace it anyways, just to ease my mind. Of course, with all the stuff they're going to upgrade anyways, I'd just do a stroker kit and really open it up. Thanks for the info Joe.
