  • Building A Big Block 87 Caprice!! Techs inside please!

The time has come for a mild buildup of my 87 Caprice. I'm ditching the carbed 305 sbc and going with a 454 bbc. What OD trans should I put in? Is it really worth the extra dough to just go FI and 4L80E?

What kind of HP are you lookin' to make? Do you want the extra weight of the 4L80 or would a built 4L60 work? Just some thoughts.

if you were towing and and hauling with it id say 4l80, but if not then i would go with a built 700R4. as far as fuel injection i am an FI guy, i tend to lean that way for the infinite self tuning that it does. carbs are good, but i love a good EFI system. some of the factory ones are pretty good, and there are also a lot of aftermarket ones out there also.

I vote for fuel injected and a TH400 with a gear vendor's overdrive installed on the tailshaft.

RWHP estimation around 500rwhp. Daily driven.

Joe - Could you elaborate and explain more on the gear vendor's OD?

Azkkn - Some occasional towing of the ski boat!

Gonna have a tanker following you? lol j/k I would go FI. The driveability and throttle response will be much better than a carbed setup. As for the tranny, a built 4L60 or 400 like Joe said would work just fine.

If you plan on going injected, you of course would have to use a PCM. With that in mind, a computer controlled 4L60E would be just fine. They can handle quite a bit more torque load than they are given credir for. I have towed in excess of 10,000 lbs numerous times with 4L60E's with not a single problem.

If you decide to go carbed, then just have a nice vacuum modulated 700R4 built. It will also be easier to hook up your speedo as well.

www.transmissioncenter.net has some pretty nice package deals on 700R4's.

Or just get the full Ramjet 502 and be done with it! It comes with the computer and everthing needed to make it run.

A Gear Vendor's overdrive unit installs in place of the 400's tail housing. The control mounts on your shifter and basically gives you a 4th gear. As you know, the amount of build stuff for a TH400 is virtually limitless and more cost effective too. Fred has one behind his TH400 and it's been working well.
