  • I've got 1k and these are my goals......

I have a thousand bucks to spend on my car (actually 2k but I am buying new rims,) and I am trying to figure the best way to spend this money for results at the track. I have people who can help me with installs but they are not particularly experienced with the LT1.

I would like some opionions from the experts on the forum as to what I should do. Eventually I want this car to be a 12 sec car and very streetable, but would like to do so without nitrous. I do not need to get there with this 1k (and can't) but make consideration for future mods that will problably need to be done.

The only current mod is the Borla cat-back.....

These are the things I'm thinking about.............

    CAI Moroso?
    MAC middies
    3.73 gears
    cam?
    porting stock heads and intake?
    new y-pipe

Please help guys, this car must get out of the 14's this year!

    Thanks

    CAI #1 Order today. LOL
Consider lower control arm relocation brackets. All the power in the world isn't going to do you any good if you can't get it to the ground. They are fairly inexpensive too.

gears will help a lot. cam and heads if you can do them for 1k then go for it. mostly the things that you do now wont help you a lot now individually, but when there all on there working together then youll see the differance

If it were me personally with an auto the first mod I would always do would be a looser converter.

Also like Jeff said look at getting a good set of lower control arms. I like Spohn's products....very good quality LCA's.

I personally wouldn't not mess with doing a cam swap in an LT1 w/o porting the heads. But that is up to you of course.

          So maybe this:

          1.CAI
          2. Looser converter
          3. Gears
          4. LCA's

That puts you over 1k, but its your baby right!

Hey Jeff, have you tried the relocation brackets? Those bolt-in brackets are very tempting...but how much would they eliminate wheel spin? I'm running the Spohn LCAs and still have no-so-great traction from a stop.

my friends father is an engine builer and he will port my stock heads and match my intake for very cheap, as long as I remove and replace the heads.

              What if I could do?.....

              Port stock heads
              CAI
              3.73 gears

Before the snow melts I would then do the LCA's.

What kind of improvements would I likely see at the track, assuming a very good port job? And how much additional power is porting the stock heads likely to produce?

              Thanks

I think they helped quite a bit. It's not a fix all lift the front wheels. They seamed to have stopped the minor wheel hop too. I'd say they are well worth it. I am using the bolt on ones from BMR. I was surprised at how well they fit and how easy they were to install. The only thing I would say is order the longer bolts for instalation. The existing bolt isn't really long enough. It comes with 2 and you reuse the existing 2 also. I'm using my stock bolts but it is on my list of things to do. http://www.bmrfabrication.com/misc.HTM

                  forgot something!

If I put in a cam as well, what would be a good cam to go with the ported stock heads? Remember, very streetable!

                  Thanks guys

Thanks for the tips Jeff. Will the non-adjustable LCAs will fit the brackets? The bolts you recommend are the "F and G Body Control Arms" bolts for $16.95?

The heads and cam approach if way out of your reach if youre still working with stock exhaust manifolds and Y-Pipe. I'd start by getting a CAI and a set of AS&M Midlength Headers with a Random Tech Y-Pipe to match. That alone will put you well above the $1000 though. But if budget permits, get a TB airfoil, 1.6 RR's, and gears to compliment the new exhaust. Finish if off with some good suspension components (i.e. LCA, brackets, panhard, drag radials) and you might just break into the 12's with the stock heads and cam. The above and a higher stall converter is pretty much a guaranteed 12 second ET!

Any suggestion on where I can get the AS&M headers or the y-pipe?

I should be able to install myself too, right?

What about the MAC mid lenghts? Are the AS&M's that much better? I have heard good things about them and I'm sure they are way cheaper.
