I am new to this message boards and am just a kid; so I do not consider myself any kind of expert at all. But I am going to tell everyone what I did to my car that made it gain easily over 150 HP from stock. I originally sent out for a $1000 project, turned into 2...then 3...then 6, 7, $8000!!!
My stock 1986 Camaro IROC-Z Z28 with 140,000 miles was in bad need of some upgrades. It had the stock 5.7 option from the factory with TPI and 1980s technology. I think it had about 220 horsepower or something like that...too little for the name "Camaro."
I decided to invest a little time and money and give my engine and whole car a rebuild. So myself and a college automotive technology major friend pulled out the motor and sent it to a machine shop. There it was stroked, ported, and balanced to 383ci of pure American muscle. We got some aluminum AFR 195 heads, upgraded cam (can't remember what exactly), Eagle stroker kit (pistons, crank, rods, etc.), and the TPIS Mini Ram fuel injection system with 58mm throttle body, and 24 lb/hr injectors. We pulled out the radiator for inspection and it was in great shape.
Next was transmission work. We took a T-56 6-speed and a 3.73 rear previously upgraded from 3.42 out of a 1995 Z28 with only 24,000 miles on them. Next came the loud Borla stainless tuneable system with dual chrome SS tips and Edelbrock headers. I bought a high rise spoiler from a '92, ram air hood from a 2002 SS, and ZR-1 Corvette chrome rims. After sound system and new carpet, my dream car was finally finished. Only thing it needs now is some original leather interior if it still exists.
Moral of the story: after spending thousands of dollars and hours of work, I would recommend buying a 1998 Z28 all together if you want a fast car. Do not gut the car completely if you don't have a lot of money and time. I should have rebuilt the motor only, went with TPI, stock 700R4, and rear. But in my haste to have the fastest car in my home town, I decided to spend a lot more than I should have. So if you do not want to spend more than $1000 on upgrades (which is what I said too!), DON'T DO WHAT I DID!!!
If you want a really fast car to boost a really bid ego, this is the perfect car for turning heads and eating rice, GTs, and a few Cobras...
...hence the license plate GT EATR...
**If anyone has any advice for upgrades or new performance parts on small budget, please give me some. I was thinking about 30 lb injectors and a supercharger later on when I get beat.
