  • Downshift Noise

I have a 96 Ta automatic and it seems to make a noise on medium downshift and acceleration. It sounds like it is from the tranny, never slips and seems to do it in cold weather. Maybe a solenoid?

Are you sure you're not mistaking the noise with your alternator belt slipping? These care are notorious for that.

An automatic should have no vibration in the shifter, it is bolted to the floor. It is cable operated and is remote from the transmission. If you are feeling a vibration, check to see if the rear trans mount is seperating. It is common for these to break and when it does, allows the tail of the trans to move up and down. It would be most noticeable in moderate engine braking or acceleration. If you find it is toast, get the more solid 1LE mount and it won't happen again.

            Rapid thumping noise

Joe my Z28 is experiencing the same distinctive noise which, is felt directly under the right arm console. When trans mount is checked what other problems or repairs might arise, if mount needs replacing where do I find a Solid 1LE mount if it's not a stocked part at AAMCO beep beep.

If you don't fix the mount soon, you may damage the universal joints with the added change in driveline angle. other than that, there isn't much to it.

                When I went looking for a 1LE mount, I couldn't find one.

I ended up getting one from a Caprice Classic police car. I don't remember the part number. I need to take a picture of it. When I went to the 6 speed, I replaced it with an Energy Suspension mount because of an unrelated problem.

I tried the Prothane and it was too noisy with the automatic.

To be fair I never tried the ES mount with the automatic. It may be that the automatic is why it was louder rather than the Prothane mount.

When I switched from my stock trans mount to a 1LE trans mount after my A4 - M6 conversion, the difference was night and day. With my stock trans mount, my car would shake vibrantly when ever I would floor it or switch gears. That all got eliminated when I upgraded to the 1LE trans mount.
