  • 3rd gen hybrid

Driving home today, I saw a 3rd gen hybrid...not a hybrid electric/gas but a hybrid Camaro/Firebird. It was the most confusing car I've seen. Its front end/lights was was of a Camaro, hood was an IROC, rear end, tail lights, rear fenders, spoiler of a Firebird. Yet all the body lines fit so perfectly. I could not tell it was a car of two types. It was very clean though, and even had racing stripes. I guess my question is...are parts of the 3rd gen Firebird and Camaro are interchangeable (doors, front fenders, etc.)? Or did this guy do a completely custom job?

They must be somewhat interchangeable. About two months ago I saw the exact opposite 3rd Gen Firebird front with a Camaro Z28 rear.

Yep, certain parts are interchangeable, but most of the people that swap Camaro and Firebird parts around have to customize and modify things, of course. There are a good number of people on Thirdgen.org with "hybrid" cars. Examples like an 87 Camaro with a Firebird-style wraparound spoiler, an 86 Trans Am with 91-92 Z28 ground effects, 3rd gen Firebirds with 4th gen spoilers, etc.

There's also a good bit of people who put 4th gen parts on their 3rd gens. Dashes, consoles, spoilers, seats, LT1s, LS1s, etc.

i guess when neads must you have to do what you have to do. i know of a couple of hybrids over here in the uk but only as the parts are not as easy to get hold of so the owners have used what they can get hold of

Third gen doors are exactly the same thats why the fenders from either car will fit as the body lines will match. There was a hybrid runnin around my town for a while too. Im not a fan of it but it is possible and looks factory like as the lines match up. Heck until 84 the interior for the camaro and firebird were the same in the gen 3 body. That is one nice thing about the third gen body style so much was the same you could pick parts from anything to make up what you broke or needed to relace.

Wow, I didn't know that. No wonder why the car I saw looked like a straight factory car, rather than a "hack job."
