  • Crankshaft end play

Anybody had end-play problems? I went through 2 sets of rear mains because the thrust bearings were gone. The engine guys blame the tranny guys, the tranny guys blame the engine guys...Something about converter pressure and flexing???
I have a after-market steel rotating assembly and a brand name auto-trans with a custom converter. I've changed converter's, flexplates. Had a different tranny shop look at it. No problem with the trans. I'm on my 3rd set of mains and I got a good 1/4 inch end play. Don't know which one to throw out the motor or the trans?
    Any ideas??

One problem that people sometimes forget about when they get an engine rebuilt is that if they cut the caps & align hone the main, this moves the center of the crank up which makes the trans slightly out of alignment. Now, if there's enough misalignment, this can cause probs with the bearings, crank, & trans input. I'm not saying this is your prob, but just a possibility. Some guys use offset trans alignment pins in the engine block to bring the alignment back into specs.

Also, when the converter is installed, you need to make sure a certain amount of freeplay is present and the better performance converters have an anti-balooning plate made from billet so they don't distort and cause problems.
