i want some opinions on what you think of the chevy smallblock 327? How does it compare to other small blox/(350)(400). etc?

As with any small block chevy engine, you can make power with it. However, with all of the 350 blocks out there, I'd start out with at least a 350 based long block. More cubes = more power!

The rest all comes down the the heads and then the cam choice, and of course a manifold that makes power where the heads & cam want to make power ... for the way you intend to use it.

I thought that the 350 and 327 have the same block different bore and stroke?

In essence.... yes. There are differences in the actual block.

However, what I'm reffering to is starting with as many cubes as you can. 350s are all over the place both as cores or as good short blocks to build from. Pistons, rods, cranks... are all going to be cheapest for 350 versions.

As far as heads, cams, manifolds.... they are all the same in design, just have to match the correct parts for your end goal. The later Vortec heads & manifolds are different, but can be used on any Gen-1 small block (LT1 is Gen-II and LS1 is Gen-III) .. and make VERY good power for the money!

The reason I don't recommend the 400, right up front is because it has some peculiarities due to the long stroke & large bore, that require special building procedures & parts. Just might not be a good "first" engine to mess with.

          opinions

well i like the 350 just because it's what i have in my car and the mods for them are a little easier to find compared to the 327 and 396. As far as the 400 goes, i don't like it. there is no real reason besides i just don't.

The 302, 327 and 350 all have the 4" bore, the 350 has the longer stroke. Both can be built to make good power, but the 350 parts are much cheaper and readily available and will make more power in the end. The 400 is a totally different story and is externally balanced with different head design due to steam holes in the block. Don't mess around with a 400 unless you know what you're doing.
