Hey, I've got a 94 Camaro and I've seen some headlight conversion kits for sale. They look pretty cool in the pictures, but I don't know if it's worth it. Do they work well, how much is involved in installing them, do they look cheap when you put them in, and anything else I might wanna know about them? This is what they look like after you put them in... http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/appea...maro/Piaa1.gif

I think those conversions look awful. Especially if you look at them close up.
Here is what I did. I went and bought 2 headlights model 4351 by Sylvania. Any will work that has the plastic retainer ring that holds the bulbs in. The factory ones are made by a company called "Guide". They epoxy the bulbs in and are difficult but not impossible to get out.
Here is the bulb and housing.
Here is the bulb removed from the housing. It's very easy to do. The are just glued in. Grab the bulb with one hand and the plastic ring with the other. Give it a quick 1/4 turn twist and it will pull right out like this.
Then pop the plastic ring off like this.

Then I bought some xenon 9006 bulbs and used silcone to hold them in. It worked great. I wish I had an after picture.2002 Electron Blue Vette, 1SC, FE3/Z51, G92 3.15 gears, 308.9 RWHP 321.7 RWTQ (before any mods), SLP headers, Z06 exhaust, MSD Ignition Wires, AC Delco Iridium Spark Plugs, 160 t-stat, lots of ECM tuning

I did mine a while back, and you can pop in a 9006 bulb but you wont get the same beam pattern as the oem lights. I also tried the Auto Optiks housings but I really didnt like the beam pattern on those lights. Check the pics bellow...
This is the comparison pic between the stock, and Auto Optik Housing with Xenon Bulb.
This is the stock Beam Pattern on the OEM light.

This is the shaving of the base that I had to do in order achieve the same beam pattern as the OEM lights in the OEM housing.1996 Arctic White Z28, A4, K&N CAI, TByrne MAF ends, BBK Twin-52mm TB, TB Bypass, SLP 1 3/4" Shorties, Richmond 3.42's, Dynomax Bullet Muffler W/Turn Down, BMR Adj. AmericanZ28, If I remember correctly, you used the "Guide" housings. Do you have a picture of the housing with the old bulb removed without the new bulb? I'd like to see it. I'm wondering if the neck for the bulb was longer than what was on mine if that was the reason you needed to shave the bulb down to get it to go in further to get your beam pattern to spread. I don't notice the light pattern on mine to be any different. Maybe your more meticulous than me.

Jeff, I did in fact use the Guide housings, but unfortunately I dont have a picture of the housing itself and I already threw them away after my last mod. Comparing the pictures that you posted and recollecting as much as I can, it appears as though the neck on those GE's are shallower than those of the Guide. You dont happen to have a side-by-side pic of the stock bulb and a 9006 would you? Did you get to compare the GE beam againts the Guide?Originally posted by Jeff 95 Z28AmericanZ28, If I remember correctly, you used the "Guide" housings. Furthermore, I would suggest that you upgrade your lighting with something different, Maro94. Although those PIAA lights will light up the road better, it makes the car look too, "different," to put it lightly. Seeing how our options are limited though, I can understand why you'd go with whats available. But fear not, sooner or later we'll come up with something that looks original and works better!

I actually found someone that wants to sell me a "conversion kit" but it's just like the one's you guys have explained to me. It is really handy though, because instead of using silicone to hold it in, he's changed the housing so that the bulbs can be replaced easily. I might go for that. I agree, those other kits aren't really something I wanna go with.White 1994 Camaro

I still have my Auto Optiks Housings if you're interested. They look exactly the same as the OEM housings and have the ability to snap bulbs in and out. I bought them and used them only once because I started modifying my oem's so I put them right back in the box. The only thing I didnt like about them was the beam pattern. They lit up the road just fine but Im very anal about beam cut-off, and like the oems, they didn't deliver. But if you like the idea of being able to swap out just the bulb in a snap, then I think they'll like them. I have pics if you're interested.

I don't have a comparison picture. I never got one of the guide housing apart. I did compare the 2006 bulb to the bulb that was in the Sylvania 4351. Except for the mounting flange they were exactly the same. It appeared to me that both would go in the housing the same distance without any trimming.Originally posted by AmericanZ28Jeff, I did in fact use the Guide housings, but unfortunately I dont have a picture of the housing itself and I already threw them away after my last mod.
