94 formula timing chain replacement????

i first believed i had an opti spark problem, but am considering another possible route. just leaving town im my 94 Formula, picking up speed on highway, car started spitting and sputtering in a split second like something broke or something. Car will idle somewhat, but backfires and sputters under any throttle. Everybody replied stating either opti or plugs and wires, but, i had a mechanic say he was 100% positive i just jumped 1 tooth on the timing chain. The odometer just rolled over 103K, could this be a definite possibility, if so, what are the important need to know steps with swapping timing chains in the LT1. Thanks

If the mechanic is 100% positive, see if he will do the work for free if he is wrong. The opti is a much better bet than the timing chain.
