hey all. yep i'm new here. i seem to have devloped a major problem with my 2000 camaro. the car just started running rough, very rough. it stumbled so bad that just idling in the driveway, it would shake the steering wheel. it's thowing a check engine light that flashes. the code it gave up is p0301. i replaced all of the plugs and wires, swapped in a new coil and still no change. oh, and it's a v6 with 66000 miles. i have had it for 2 years and it's always been fine. any ideas?

    thanks,
    chris

If you've already replaced the coil, plugs and wires, I'd replace the injector on the #1 cylinder next.

Before you spend any more $$ on it though, you should test for spark at the plug and pulse at the injector.

i pulled the plug and left it attached to the plug wire and watched it as my better half cranked it over. lots of spark. how do i check the pulse on the injector?

You check for pulse at the injector with a special tool called a Noid Light (auto zone Part number OEM 25143)

is there another name for this noid light? i went to the autozone website and came up with nothing. i even tried to use the part number.

                thanks,

If you have an OHM meter you can also check the resistance at each injector. I am not sure what the spec range is for a V6, but if that injector is way off compared to the rest, it's probably bad.

                      Go the injector route 1st.

Could also be the coil pack module. Sure hope not as its about $200 +...

well, i ordered the noid tester.....in the mean time i did a compression test. all cyclinders were 170-175, except for #1. it has nothing. with the plug out, i can literally put my finger over the hole and not encounter any resistance. i know the valves are working, because i have the valve cover off watching the valves move. any ideas? if i have to replace this motor, are there any good mods for the new 3.8? i guess i will pull the oil pan and see if the connecting rod came apart or broke.

You might want to squirt some oil into the spark plug hole, and rerun the compression test. If you get some pressure, its probably the rings, if not, then it could be a broken valve (chuncked). If it was something from below, then you would have all kinds of nasty noise. You should plan on pulling the heads first to see what you have there.

A small hole melted through the piston would not make any noise, and it would exhibit the loss of compression you are experiencing.

Yes it would, terrible thought though. But it would be a pain to see that from the bottom end, and you would have a "puffing" into the crankcase when it was running.
