  • Why do so many warehouses still use wooden crates when plastic alternatives.

Okay so this genuinely puzzles me and I want to hear what people here actually think because I feel like I might be missing something obvious. We took over management of a storage facility in Dubai about eight months ago and when we arrived the whole operation was running on old wooden crates that were honestly in pretty rough shape with splinters, warped bases and a couple that had started to smell which I suspect was moisture getting into the wood over time. The previous management had just kept replacing damaged ones with more of the same which felt like a cycle that was never going to end. One of the first things I pushed for was switching to a pallet plastic box system because from everything I had read they are more durable, easier to clean, resistant to moisture and pests, and don't degrade the same way wood does in humid storage conditions which is genuinely relevant for our facility. I came across crateco.ae while researching local suppliers and their container range helped me understand the different grades and configurations available which was useful because I had assumed it was a pretty simple product category but it turns out there are quite a few variables worth thinking about. The transition itself went smoothly and the team adapted quickly but what surprised me was how many other operators I've spoken to since then are still defaulting to wood out of habit rather than because it's actually the better option for their use case. Maybe there's a cost argument I'm not fully appreciating or some structural advantage in certain scenarios that justifies sticking with traditional materials but I honestly haven't found a convincing reason yet. Would be really interested to hear from people who have compared both seriously and landed on a clear preference either way.
