The pumps that keep NO dry can NOT prevent the flood that will happen. Once the water comes over the levees, the flood cannot be stopped. The problem is that with the storm surge they are talking about, NO could be flooded from both sides, MS river and the Lake. The pumps do not have the capacity to stop the flood.
If they get the storm surge they are talking about, NO could be under as much as 22 feet of water. Stand your 4th gen on end, stand up on the bumper and reach up. You might touch air. MAYBE
"No, officer, that bottle is my onboard Halon system"
From what I just heard, some of the pumps are having trouble even starting. On top of that, the power to the Superdome (N.O.'s shelter of 20,000+ people) was lost, and the back-up generators aren't quite doing the job. I hope this thing fizzles out quick.

I was just listening to a live feed, and the reporter was giving his live report from a fire station Their was this loud noise in the background. The anchor woman ask the reporter what happened. He says the large doors on the fire house just ripped off.

I too just listened to a live feed as well....it sounds bad. I'm trying to multitask here at work, but I could have sworn I just heard that the roof of the superdome just got demolished and it's raining inside there now.
I hate to say it like this...but I hope people can think on the go right now, and try and keep that casualty rate down. This is bad....my heart and prayers go out

The storm has now torn two 6 foot holes in the roof of the huge arena. People inside can hear the rumbling of the winds ripping at the metal on the roof. They can see the metal flapping, and can even see the sky through the holes.
Water is dripping in and people are being moved away from about five sections of seats. Everyone is still safe.
The mississippi levee has failed, houses are half under water, and the french quarters is almost submerged.
Edit:
Another levee just broke, a hotel has collapsed, the windows are blown out of the hyatt regency, an apt. building has collapsed with people trapped, the worst of the hurricane is hitting as we speak, water levels have been recorded at 9 feet.
Second Edit:
Hurricane down to a category 3, houses underwater up to the ceilings, boats are crashing in to some buildings.

There are reports now that one, and possibly two, oil rigs were dislodged in the gulf and are floating away. Oil futures hit over $70/barrel in trading today.
