29.9¢ per gallon for regular. That's as much as I'm going to admit.

I've only been buying gas for about 2 and a half years, no car to put it in. I think about $1.20... but I didn't used to pay attention to it because it felt reasonable. It was like $20 to fill up... not $50 or more...

When I was but a wee lad working at the ARCO station, I pumped gas at 19.9 cents a gallon for regular, checked the oil, and cleaned the windshield. If the guy bought a quart of oil, usually around 50 cents, I would check the tire pressures for him too. Our station didn't have it, but you could get reclaimed oil for 10 cents a quart.

The corner of 32nd and Shea Blvd, in Paradise Valley, AZ had the Arco, Union 76, Shell and a Chevron station. We were usually a penney below the other guys, but sometimes we would dive down around 15 cents a gallon.

I had a '68 GTO that I would fill up with $5 of premium, run Central Ave on Friday and Saturday nite, and still have enough gas for the rest of the week.

          That was 1970 and 1971.

            Less than $0.20 per gallon.....

I got a job pumping gas in an Esso (now Exxon) station in 1958. I got paid $1.00 an hour, and gas was in the range of 16.9 - 19.9 cents per gallon. A bunch of guys in a car would come in and see if they could scrape up 50-cents between them to buy enough gas to cruise for the night........ It wasn't long after that - maybe around 1960 - when it went over 20-cents a gallon.

I remember one day where a guy came in and said "gimme 5".... and I asked him whether he wanted 5 gallons of $5 worth. When he didn't answer I put $5 worth in the tank (over 20 gallons), and asked him for the $5. He told me he only wanted 5 gallons, and we had to put the car on the lift and drain 15 gallons out of the tank. (Gas tanks used to be larger when cars got less than 10 miles/gallon )
