This was the hardest day of my life.
I got Zaily, my Golden Retriever (mix) August of 2002. I was a sophomore in college and 19 years old. She was 5 weeks old. Being in college, I got to spend over 15-20 hours with her everyday as she grew up. We instantly became best friends and of course grew very very close. She did in three years what most dogs do in their whole lives. She lived in 4 different places with me, and three roommates who also grew very close to her. Zaily and I did everything together, hiked tons of trails, swam in tons of lakes, ponds, pools, etc... I knew her better than anybody and she knew me. She was a very quiet, supportive, protective, and sensitive dog, to me she was the perfect dog, all I could ever ask for.
When I got a job in June, right out of college she of course came with me. Moving more than 5 hours away from every friend and family member was very rough, but I was lucky to have my best friend with me through it all. Sunday, as I went out to check on her, I found her dead.
I tried for nearly 15 min to revive her with chest compressions and breathing into her snot. I finally gave up collapsing on her chest in a
ing heap. The vet says it was most likely congenital aortic stenosis, which affects Newfoundlands, and can be found in Goldens. She was only three.
This was the worst day of my life, and will never forget it. She was the greatest dog to me, and feel as if I've lost my best friend. Work was very hard today, and I’m sure it will be for the rest of the week.
I didn't write this for sympathy, but I wanted my f-body family to know about this great animal. I could use a little cheering up. Thanks for everything guys.
